James R. Frederick was buried at Manchester Cemetery, New Franklin, Summit Co., Ohio.2,4 He was born in 1943.2 He FOUR CHILDREN DIE AS BLAZE SWEEPS MANCHESTER HOME - Two Older Boys Jump To Safety Efforts To Save Others Fail. Twin girls and their two brothers were burned to death early today when fire destroyed their home at 403 Ott dr., Manchester. Dead are Judy and Joyce Frederick, 6-year-old twins, and their brothers, James 11, and Dennis, 8. They and four other children and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Frederick, were asleep when the fire broke out about 1:15 a.m. Kenneth, 17, and Michael, 15, jumped to safety from an upstairs room. The other young sters, Sue Ellen, 9, and Tom, 12, also escaped. Michael may have seriously injured his left foot when he jumped. The leg already had been in a cast as a result of a power mower accident. The youth's crutch was burned in the fire. Deputy Sheriff Waynt Eaken and Charles Madden, chief coroner's Investigator, called the fire one of the worst tragedies they had ever seen. Bodies of the four children were burned beyond recognition, they said. The fire apparently started la the twins' downstairs bedroom although the cause has not been determined. Sue Ellen, who slept down stairs, discovered the fire and awakened her parents but was unable to rouse the twins. Frederick told Eaken that he ran into the twins room and grabbed the flaming draperies oil the windows. "I then ran into the garage for a fire extinguisher," Frederick said. "As I left the garage the whole house was on fire. I couldn't go back In." He said he ran to the twins' bedroom and grabbed something in the yard to smash in the window which was locked inside. He saw the twins at the window but they fell backward to the floor, overcome by smoke. Mrs. Frederick shouted to her sons to jump. Kenneth and Michael did but the two smaller boys, Dennis and James, didn't awaken. Firemen found their bodies huddled in what was left of their beds. Eaken said "there was so much fire you couldn't get near the place." "I've never seen anything like it," he added. Both Frederick and his wife. Marie, received minor burns and young Tom suffered ill effects from the smoke. Fifteen volunteer firemen from Manchester and Clinton along with five pieces of equipment answered the call. Neighbors across the road, Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Johnson, sounded the alarm, Johnson said firemen ran out of water several times and had to go back for more to fill the tanks on the trucks. "As we played water on the house we could see one of the twins through the window," said Johnny Hughes, a Manchester fireman. Mike Harget, Franklin Twp. fire chief, estimated loss to the house and furnishings at $9,000. First story of the place is concrete block and the upper story is frame. The family salvaged only their night clothes. Part of the family is living temporarily with Mrs. Frederick's mother, Mrs. Nellie Fought at 1386 Moore st. in South Akron. Others plan to make their home temporarily with Frederick's brother, Clifford, at 1195 Swigart rd., Manchester. Kenneth Frederick is an employe of the Borden Milk Co. Already plans are being made in the Manchester area for a campaign to acquire clothing and other essentials for the Fredericks. Harold Schuler, commander of the Paul Harget American Legion post, has called a special meeting of Legionnaires tonight at his home, 871 W. Nimisila rd. Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for Judy, Joyce, Dennis and James are incomplete. Their bodies are at the Swigart Funeral Home in Canal Fulton. on June 1, 1955.3 He died on June 1, 1955 at Manchester, Adams Co., Ohio.3,4
