Donna Joan Fetty Shawkey1

F, d. January 12, 1977
MotherLaura Bell Shawkey1 b. June 14, 1908, d. July 14, 1971
Her married name was Yuan. Donna Joan Fetty Shawkey married Dr. Yuen Kwei Yuan. Donna Joan Fetty Shawkey died on January 12, 1977 at Pasadena, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland.2 She Couple Shot To Death In Their Tavern - A former physician and his wife were shot to death last night in the small Anne Arundel county tavern they had started operating only three months ago. County detectives believe they were killed during a robbery. Police identified the victims as Yuen K. Yuan, 61, of Pasadena, a former physician who lost his license to practice medicine last year, and his wife, Donna Joan Yuan, 42. Both were shot with a small-caliber handgun an undisclosed number of times and were found sprawled behind the front counter of the tavern around 11 P.M. They had only started operating Yuan's Restaurant, located on Old Annapolis road and formerly known as Wolfe's Bar, about three months ago. Police said the establishment, located in Sun Valley, did not serve food, and operated mostly as a packaged goods store. Police said the tavern's cash register had been emptied. The bodies were found in the front of the store, and police theorized Mr. and Mrs. Yuan may have been waiting on a customer at the time of the shooting. There were no signs of a struggle. The bodies were discovered by a customer who came in to make a purchase around 11 P.M., police said. The victims had been dead for about three hours, police said. Last week, a single round from a shotgun had been fired through the side door of the bar just after it had closed, neighbors said. Friends said the murdered couple had five children, ranging in age from 9 to 17. Area residents said the couple worked at the bar and liquor store together every night while their older children remained at home to care for younger members of the family. When they had bought the establishment it was a package goods store, but Mr. and Mrs. Yuan had opened part of the building as a bar. The couple reportedly worked the front counter from behind a glass partition. Mr. Yuan was one of six Maryland doctors whose licenses were revoked in 1976 by the Maryland Commission on Medical Discipline. The commission had alleged that Mr. Yuan once tried to bribe a federal drug inspector. Mr. Yuan's difficulties in the medical profession started in the 1950's, a few years after he came to the United States from China. A 1940 graduate of Shanghai's Tung Nan Medical College, Mr. Yuan worked in a number of American hospitals before moving to Maryland in the early 1950's. It was then that he became associated with Dr. Robert H. Reddick, a former state psychiatrist who was convicted in 1958 of forging and selling homeopathic medical licenses. Mr. Yuan was a witness in investigations into the Reddick scandal. He never was charged in the case. But in 1964, Mr. Yuan, who then operated out of an office in the 3800 block south Hanover street, Baltimore, pleaded no-contest to charges that he attempted to bribe an Internal Revenue Service agent investigating his tax returns. He was fined $7,500 in federal court. In 1974, Mr. Yuan, who then had offices in Pasadena and Glen Burnie, was given a two-year prison term after he was convicted of trying to bribe two federal narcotics agents making an audit of his prescription records a year earlier. It could not be determined if Mr. Yuan ever went to prison. County police issued an urgent plea for information about the couple's activities last night. Anyone who saw Mr. and Mrs. Yuan before 8 P.M. is asked to call 937-4264. on January 12, 1977.2 She Millersville - Anne Arundel county police yesterday arrested three Baltimore county men and charged them with the robbery-murder of a former physician and his wife Tuesday. A fourth man allegedly linked to the murder has fled the state, police said, and the FBI has been brought into the case to help look for him. Each of the three arrested was charged with two counts of homicide. They were being held at county police headquarters here awaiting a hearing before a court commissioner yesterday. All are from the Lansdowne area. They are: Lawrence C. Sinclair, 21. of the 4100 block McDowell lane; Robert F. Hanson, 20, of the 3800 block Old Annapolis road; and Thomas R. Grosso, 22. of the 2700 block Virginia avenue. Police said the fourth man, Douglas K. Frye, 22, of Seagull drive, in northern Anne Arundel county, is believed to be heading for North Carolina. He has been charged in warrants with the murders. Yuen K. Yuan, 61, and Donna J. Yuan, 42, were found late Tuesday in their package goods store on Old Annapolis road in the Lipin's Corner area, police said. Both had been shot to death. Lt. Robert Russell, of the county police's criminal investigation division, said there was no evidence of a violent struggle in the store and that the couple were "apparently shot for no reason." He said $148 had been taken in the robbery. Mr. Yuan had been a practicing physician in the county, but the state's Commission on Medical Discipline revoked his license last July after he pleaded guilty to attempting to bribe a federal narcotics agent in 1974. Lieutenant Russell said all three men were arrested at their homes between 1.30 A.M. and 3 A.M. yesterday without incident. According to police, a .38-caliber revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, was found under Mr. Sinclair's bed. According to police, one of the suspects was identified from police photographs as having been in the Yuan establishment that day, and the investigation then led to the other three. on January 15, 1977.3
