He flew in the Korean combat area for 15 months. Back in the United States, the piane in which he was a passenger and another collided in the air April 4 at Mobile, Ala., and Whitacre was killed. Word of the death just has reached the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Whitacre of Blue Mound since telegrams apparently were held up by the Western Union strike. Junior Whitacre was the son of Arthur and Grace Whitacre of Redding, Calif., formerly of Blue Mound township. He was born July 1, 1928, in Livingston County, leaving here in 1928. The airman receieved widespread publicity early last year for successfully shooting at communist troops from the bock door of a C-47 transport plane. His buddies didn't think it could be done, but Whitacre proved otherwise. The fatal plane accident occurred as the plane approached Brookley Air Field base. Fifteen persons died. Whitacre was with the 1735th Air Transport squadron, having reenlisted in the air force in January. He first enlisted Jan. 7, 1948, and went to Japan in Aprll 8, 1950. He spent 15 months with a transport unit in Korea, receiving an Oak Leaf Cluster and Air Medal for duties performed with the unit. There was a presidential citation for evacuation of troops besieged in the Chasin reservoir area. Whitacre returned to the United States last October 22 and was stationed at Brookley field. The body was returned to Redding, where casket bearers were former schoolmates at Shasta Union high school. Whitacre was graduated from the school in 1947. on April 22, 1952.1
