After retiring, he continued part-time as a courier for BB&T Bank, limousine service for CSX and a greeter for Shoney's in Mechanicsville, Va. He loved music and volunteered his talents by playing at nursing homes, family reunions and birthday parties. Boating, fishing and being around people were ways he loved to pass the time. He loved making up songs and singing them to you. Twisting and playing on words to see that look on your face always put a smile on his. Wyatt was born November 21, 1929, a son of the late Robert and Vergie Whorley Pate and was also preceded in death by his son, Wyatt "Mike" Lester Pate Jr; brothers, John and Forrest Pate; sister, Winnie Lorraine Lambert; brothers-inlaw, Elmer Embrey and Albert St. Clair. Wyatt is survived by his sisters, Lillie Pate Embrey and Ruby Pate St. Clair; sistersin-law, Charlotte and Mary Pate; his special friend and caregiver, Linda Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted from Lynch ConnerBowman Funeral Home 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009, with Dr. Richard Harrell and the Rev. Jim Steele officiating. Interment will follow in the Pate Family Cemetery, Boones Mill. on September 21, 2009.4

David is survived by his sons, David (Katie) and Benjamin (Kristen); grandchildren, Oliver, Ford, Maclin, and Elsie; his sisters, Judy (Marcus) Potts, Mary Beth (Jim) Cargill, and Leigh Ann Stevens. He was predeceased by his father, David Parrish Sr. and mother, Marlene Stump. David graduated from Cave Spring High School, Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and Hollins University with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. Following college, he developed a successful career as a data analyst in health care and was a devoted member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Roanoke. David was also an avid guitarist. In college, he was known to play Jimi Hendrix solos through an amp posted in his dorm room window for everyone to hear. He went on to play more subtle, live acoustic sets at local venues around Roanoke. He loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed long rides on the Blue Ridge Parkway, whether by bicycle or convertible. His love of music and the outdoors continued throughout his life and he delighted in sharing these passions with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Pappy." A Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2020, at Evergreen Burial Park. on July 31, 2020.5
