His Social Security Number was 228-10-7062.1 Melvin Luck Perdue was buried at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, San Diego Co., California.5 He married Geraldine "Gerry" Dorris.5,6 Melvin Luck Perdue was born on June 17, 1920 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3,7 He died on March 8, 1996 at Spring Valley, San Diego Co., California, at age 75.1,3,7,5 He Melvin Perdue had the perfect death, his widow said. The longtime Spring Valley resident, whom the Monte Vista High School football team once called its No. 1 fan, had a fatal heart attack Friday after his 16-year-old grandson, Troy, hit a home run for the school. Mr. Perdue was 76. "He got excited, I guess," said his widow, Geraldine "Gerry" Perdue. "It was just perfect. It was just his time to go." Since a heart attack last year, Mr. Perdue had been on doctor's orders not to do manual labor or get too excited. That was a tall order for a man whose life revolved around the sporting activities of his four grandchildren. "He loved sports," Mrs. Perdue said of her husband, who played baseball while in the Navy. Mr. Perdue's 20 years of service included World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. His ship, the mine layer Oglala, sank. Mr. Perdue was uninjured, but he lost all his possessions. He also served as fire chief in Guam. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Perdue joined National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. He spent 16 years working as a carpenter's foreman. Mr. Perdue was born in Roanoke, Va., but lived in San Diego County for 52 years. In 1971, he and his wife moved to a home near Monte Vista High. The couple began following the school's sports teams soon after that. Mr. Perdue was named the "No. 1 fan at Monte Vista High" at a football awards banquet in January 1994. In addition to his wife, Mr. Perdue is survived by his daughter, Patty Rodriguez, of Jamul; son, Steve Perdue, of Spring Valley; mother, Pearl Turner, of Roanoke, Va; brother, Harold Perdue, of Roanoke; sisters Catherine Spicer, of Blue Ridge, Va., and Betty Lewis, of Portsmouth, Va; and four grandchildren. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary. Graveside services begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Greenwood Memorial Park. on March 11, 1996.5
