He was born on November 17, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Daniel Lester Herndon and Janie Hutcherson Herndon. He was predeceased by his wife Eva Boswell Herndon. He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church and retired from Dan River Inc. and farming. Mr. Herndon is survived by two daughters, Carol E. Herndon of Dry Fork, Mae H. Redd of Dry Fork, and one son John E. Herndon, Jr. and his wife Donna of Chatham, three grandchildren, Anita C. Redd of Raleigh, NC, Liz M. Herndon of Chatham, and one grandson, Lee E. Herndon of Chatham. In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Harvey Herndon and Benjamin Herndon; four sisters, Madeline H. Worley, Mary H. Haymore, Ruth H. His entire life had been spent in the county and Danville, and he had made his home in the city for the past 36 years. He bad been employed with the Chicken Cafe since its opening more than ten years ago. He was of the Holiness faith. He was married to the former Miss Cleo Arnold on May 9, 1925, and she survives him, with two daughters; Mrs. Janie Hensley of Durham, N.C., and Miss Frances Lee Herndon of Danville; and three sons, Garnett Herndon, Guy Herndon and Franklin Herndon, all of Danville. He also leaves four sisters: Mrs. Mattie Worley of Dry Fork, Mrs. Mary Haymore and Mrs. Ruth Wood, both of the Mt. Cross Road, and Miss Reba Herndon of Dry Fork; two brothers: Benjamin Herndon of Danville and Johnny Herndon of Dry Fork; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Swicegood Funeral Home, tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 o'clock by the Rev. Paul Ray, the Rev. F. A. Dail, and the Rev. Richard Smith. lnterment will follow in the Schoolfield Cemetery. on October 12, 1960.⁴

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Norma Adams of Danville; one brother, and four sisters, Johnny Herndon and Mrs. Mattie Worley of Dry Fork, Mrs. Ruth Wood and Mrs. Mary Haymore of the Mt. Cross Rt., and Miss Reba Herndon of Petersburg; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at Swicegood Chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Maj. Sam Crowder, the Rev. Paul M. Ray and the Rev. Billy J. Hutcherson. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery. The body is at Swicegood Funeral Home and the family is at the residence on Ashlawn Drive. on April 12, 1971.²
