Born June 24, 1926, in Princeton, he was the son of the late Martin Luther Howell Sr. and Edna Mae Smith Howell. Mr. Howell was a graduate of Princeton High School, and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Howell's career with the railroad spanned for more than 44 years, having worked for the Virginian Railroad, Norfolk and Western Railroad and retiring from the Norfolk Southern Railroad as a signal foreman. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Signals. Mr. Howell was a simple man, he enjoyed his garden, fishing and hunting, building bird houses, being outdoors and collecting trains. Early in his life, he along with his sisters sung on the Princeton Radio Station for several years. While his health permitted, he attended Painters Chapel United Methodist Church at Speedway. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life of 60 years, Mary Emmaline Hill Howell; a daughter-in-law, Donna S. Howell; and a son-in-law, Keith Danieley. He was also preceded in death by four siblings, Emma Craig, Elva Kendrat, Alma Jean Stewart, and Margaret Craig. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Those left to cherish his memory, six children, Michael Reed Bailey and wife Kathy of Delaware, Martin Edward Howell and friend Janet Holliday, Kenneth "Jerry" Howell all of True, Regina Carol Danieley, Timothy Wayne Howell and wife Ellen all of Pipestem, and Thomas Kevin Howell and wife Melissa of Charlotte North Carolina; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Military graveside services will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, under the direction of the West Virginia Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council. on January 8, 2013.3

Jerry is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda Crigger Bryant; son, Ronald Christopher and wife Jennifer Soltis Bryant, of Charlotte, N.C; daughter, Erin Bryant Rice and husband, Christopher Charles Rice, of Suffolk; son, Travis Wayne Bryant, of Richmond; grandson, Owen Beck Bryant; and granddaughter, Cecilia Carter Rice. He is also survived by his older brother, Jimmy Scott Bryant and wife, Mimi Koster Bryant, of Jacksonville, Fla; aunts, Janet Scott Beck, Jean Scott Lansing, and Virginia Scott Connor; uncle, Richard Scott; in-laws, Billy and Pam Williams and Jeff and Mary Crigger; as well as other family members. He is predeceased by his younger brother, Ronald David Bryant. An avid sports fan himself, Jerry enjoyed coaching youth sports for much of his life. He also loved college football, and spent many Saturdays cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies and Clemson Tigers. A service in celebration of Jerry's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, where Jerry was a long-time member, with the Rev. Bart Smith officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, as well as immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. William Fintel, Dr. Nina K. Sweeney, as well as the staff at Lewis-Gale Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for the Jerry Bryant Memorial Fund, 1837 Grandin Road, Roanoke, VA 24015.
