Vernon, to Irwin Lee and Selma Anna (McKern) DeVine. She graduated high school in Mt. Vernon. She was married twice, first to Bob Ross, and then to Harriman McKinney, who died in 1975. She worked as a lumber resource clerk for Malheur National Forest, retiring in 1992. She also worked for the power company, as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Cafe and picked fruit for Thomas Orchards. She loved hunting, fishing, creating wedding cakes, gardening, picking buttercups, mushrooms and huckleberries, and taking autumn rides. She raised lambs, rabbits, chickens and steers on her beloved home just west of Mt. Vernon. She also ran a boarding house where she raised several children. She loved to bowl and was a tournament champion of her league. She also enjoyed watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy." She liked to play bingo and looked forward to the senior bus trips to Winnemucca and the long-awaited trip to Las Vegas, Nev. She also loved her cat Teaks. She was a member of the Mt. Chapel Church and a proud state level Grange member, representing the Mt. Vernon Grange #659. She held many offices in the grange and was a lifetime member. She was honored with the "Homemaker of the Year" award by the Grant County Fair in 2002. She believed in keeping small school values and was a crusader for disability awareness. She was a breast cancer survivor who was strong beyond belief. She raised a handicapped child in a public school and watched her graduate with honors. Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Dee; her two sons, Shane Lee and Mackie Dee; her husbands, Bob Ross and Harriman "Mac" McKinney; and several uncles, aunts and cousins. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Kay Cloud, Texas, and Stacey Ann McKinney, Prairie City; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilda Hope McKinney Memorial Fund through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845. on February 20, 2008.1

She received the Point of Light Award for her humanitarian efforts in regards to the Forest Service, and the Heart Award for the Civil Rights and Disabilities for Malheur National Forest. Survivors include her companion Red Dickerson of Prairie City. Contributions to the Stacey McKinney Memorial Fund may be made through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845. on August 9, 2011.3

Vernon to J.E and Jessie "Stormer" McKern. She attended school in Mt. Vernon, graduating from high school May 1, 1935. In 1935, she married Dale Yokom and to that union one daughter, Marilyn Colleen, was born. Mr. Yokom died in 1938 in a tragic accident. On April 4, 1941, she married Percy James "Jim" Rutter. Six weeks later, Mr. Rutter was called back into active service in the U.S Navy. During the war, Mrs. Rutter and Marilyn accompanied Mr. Rutter from Vallejo, Calif. to Staten Island, N.Y., via several other navel bases until he was shipped out to the Pacific Theatre. Mrs. Rutter then drove herself and Marilyn back to Oregon. After the war, they made their home in John Day. In 1953, they owned John Day Cleaners and Laundry. With Dana and Frances Saunders, they opened Rutters Stationery Store in John Day and operated it until Mr. Rutter's health required them to sell the store to Idaho Typewriter Exchange. During these years, Mrs. Rutter was a worthy Matron of Eastern Star, Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls and active in church. Mr. Rutter died in 1962. Mrs. Rutter attended business college in Portland. After graduating, she went to work for Audrey Badley and then became the secretary at Grant Union High School for many years. In 1978, she moved to Newport and bought an ocean-view home at Pacific Beach Mobile Park. She was a deaconess in her church. She was Volunteer of the Year in Lincoln County for work at Mark Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport Aquarium and Newport Chamber of Commerce. On May 3, 1998, she married Eldon Whitesitt of Newport. They made several trips to South Dakota, Hawaii, Montana, Crater Lake and Minnesota for her great-great-grandson's first birthday. Mrs. Rutter enjoyed walking, beachcombing, traveling abroad, church, volunteer work and shopping. She enjoyed her grandchildren and her dogs, GiGi and Zack. She is survived by her husband, Eldon Whitesitt, of Newport; daughter, Marilyn, and her husband, Pastor Duane Cheadle, of Prairie City; brother, Merrill McKern, of Eugene; sister, Wilma (McKern) Bauer, of Mt. Vernon; one sister-in-law, Marilyn McKern, of John Day; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Jessie McKern, of Mt. Vernon; two husbands, Dale Yokom and Jim Rutter; and one brother, Melvin "Shorty" McKern, of Mt.Vernon. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Pathway Hospice of Baker City, through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Baker City, OR 97814. on October 21, 2007.1

Vernon died Oct. 25 at Blue Mountain Hospital. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at Driskill Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Canyon City Cemetery. Mr. McKern was born Aug. 25, 1923, at Mt. Vernon to Jay E. and Jessie (Stormer) McKern. He was educated at Mt. Vernon and graduated from high school in 1942. In 1942, he joined the United States Navy and served in the Atlantic and South Pacific until his discharge in 1945. On Aug. 4, 1946, he married Marilyn Frances Southwick at Mt. Vernon. He was employed in the lumber industry until 1970. He owned and operated the Texaco Station in Mt. Vernon for 32 years. Mr. McKern was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks for 55 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, branding with Sprouls and visiting with his friends. Mr. McKern is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Duane and Steve of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made to the Elks Eye Clinic. Driskill Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. on October 27, 2002.2

Vernon, died Aug. 21, 2011, at Blue Mountain Nursing Home. Viewing will be from noon-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Driskill Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Canyon City Cemetery with Pastor Levi Manitsas officiating. A potluck reception will follow at Clyde Holliday State Park. Mrs. McKern was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Ogden, Utah, to Howard and Francis (Nye) Southwick. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1946. That same year she married Melvin "Shorty" McKern in Mt. Vernon. She enjoyed working on puzzles, camping, fishing and, one of her favorite activities, evening road hunting. She also liked playing bingo at the John Day Senior Center. When she was younger, she enjoyed bowling, and ceramics and gardening clubs with her friends. She was well known in Mt. Vernon, where she was a bookkeeper for 40 years at the McKern gas station. She retired in 2008. She always enjoyed seeing people she knew. As a young girl, she lived in a saw mill woods camp in Fox Valley. She spent a year there, hiking to a one-room school. Survivors include her sons, Duane and Steve McKern of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shorty, in 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to Volunteer Services for Carrie Young Memorial Fund through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845. on August 23, 2011.2

Vernon passed away August 21 at the Golden Heritage Foster Home in John Day. A memorial service will be held Friday August 26 at 9:00 AM at the Mt. Vernon Grange. A pancake breakfast and reception will be held at the Grange following the service. Mary was born to Rolla and Pearl (Smith) Johnson on March 15, 1920 in Fossil, Oregon. She married Derrol McKern on June 16, 1938 in Spokane, Washington. Mary and Derrol settled in Mt. Vernon on the family homestead where they built a home, raised cattle, and operated a small dairy for many years. In 1988, Mary and Derrol celebrated their 50th anniversary at the Mt Vernon Grange. Derrol passed away in 1990 leaving a big hole in Mary's life. She filled it with service to others and loving support of her family and friends. Mary was a dedicated member of the Mt Vernon Grange and often volunteered at the John Day Senior Center until her health prevented it. She will be remembered by her family, her many friends, and everyone she came into with over the years for her kindness, her gentle spirit and her open heart. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Johnson, and her husband Derrol. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, and cousins. Memorial contributions can be made to the John Day Senior Center through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd, John Day, OR, 97845. on August 23, 2011.2
