He was born on May 29, 1915 at Oriskany, Virginia, in Botetourt County, a son of the late Edward Holman and Laudonia May Elmore Stebar Nelson, and was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. Nelson served in the Civil Conservation Corp at Douthat State Park and the Coast Artillery for the U.S. Army. He retired from CSX Railway as a Locomotive Engineer with 51 years seniority. He had served since 1955 as Pastor, Trustee, and Secretary-Treasurer of Emmanuel Temple Church In Christ in Low Moor, Virginia. He is survived by one daughter, Carletta L. Nelson of Selma; one son, Carl B. Nelson, Sr. of Clifton Forge; one granddaughter, Melissa D. Nelson of Clifton Forge; one grandson and his wife, Carl B. Nelson, Jr. and wife Stephanie Craft Nelson of Covington; two great grandchildren, Maurice D. Nelson of Clifton Forge and Carl W. Nelson of Covington; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by connecting members, Jan, Matt, Bonnie, Tia, Jessica, Tina, Mitzie and two children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Furry Nelson on October 2, 2000; three brothers; two sisters; five half brothers; five half sisters; and three sisters-in-law. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 3:00 P.M. from Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor with the Reverend Johnnie Mize officiating. Interment will follow. There will be no formal visitation; however friends may call Nicely Funeral Home at anytime or at the residence of Carletta Nelson, 1305 John Tyler Street, Selma, VA.
