He was born Feb. 5, 1934 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Edward F. and Beulah Wiseman Coffey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Lewis Coffey, and one sister, Shirley Mitchell. Mr. Coffey was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church of Roanoke and also a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion Post. Surviving are his loving wife of 27 years, Clara "Pat" Coffey; two brothers, Maynard Coffey and Fred Coffey and wife Judy; one sister, Bernice Grow; step-children Joseph Whitten and wife Pam, Barry Whitten and wife Pam, Lisa Funkhouser and husband Cracker; four grandsons and three great-grandchildren; special dog Isabelle. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel by Pastor Steve O'Dell and Pastor Johnny Tickle. Burial will follow at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, 1020 19th St NW - Suite 475,Washington, DC 20036. Boggs, 59, 112 North Coastal Highway, was killed yesterday in a head-on automobile collision on U.S. Highway 17 in front of Port Wentworth City Hall. Police said James H. Partain Jr., 23, 107 Gordon St., apparently fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line of the road about 7:30 a.m., police said. Boggs was driving an oncoming vehicle. Partain faces charges of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and improper lane usage, police said. He was treated at Candler General Hospital yesterday morning and later released. Police said Boggs was driving a 1976 Chevy pickup truck with a boat and trailer attached. Escaping serious injury was Bogg's wife, Enoa Boggs, who was treated at Candler and later released. Born in Clay County, W. Va., Boggs had lived in Chatham County for the past 15 years. He was a foreman at Georgia Pacific Corp. and a World War II veteran. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Joe Nutter of Sommersville, W. Va., and Mrs. Gary L. Owens of Craigsville, W. Va; three sons, Tawny Boggs of Rupert, W. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Hall Peters in 2004; a daughter, Sharon "Suzi" Huff; two brothers, Herman and Melvin Peters; and seven sisters, Violet Dillon, Tinnie Turner, Noreta Hodges, and Nora, Ora, Bessie and Lessie Peters. He retired from the Bassett Chair Co. with 30 years of service. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
