Caldwell, 83, of Vinton, Va., passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on November 20, 1940, the son of the late Percy Granville Caldwell and Mable Lillian Duncan Caldwell, and brother of Robert Leslie Caldwell. Emmette was a veteran of the United States Army, earning the rank of E-5, Sergeant MOS 62E20 Combat Engineer, stationed at Fort Jackson and Fort Stewart. He served in the Vietnam War, assigned to the 919th Engineer Company (Red Devils), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR). After returning from Vietnam, he worked at the Roanoke and then Salem Sav-A-Stop company. A few years later, Emmette along with his brother, Robert, and wife, Mary, started their own painting business which thrived for over 35 years in the local area. More recently, Emmette worked and retired from Clearbrook Walmart after eight years. Emmette was a lifelong Richard Petty family racing fan, making annual trips to Randleman, NC., and sponsored a local Late Model car running the Franklin County Speedway in the 1980's and 90's. Emmette was also an avid hunter, fisherman, and in his earlier years enjoyed running rabbits with his dogs. He was very special, and he amazed his grand and great-grandchildren with many stories and tales. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Elsie Robertson Caldwell; daughter, Tammy Annette King (Sam), and her children, Richard Kyle Nimmo (Brooke), Ariel Nicole Gray (Sam), Brandon James King (Virginia Grace); son, Timothy Wayne Caldwell (Holly), and their children, Landon Monroe Caldwell, Madison Lynn Guy, and Peyton Nathaniel Guy; and sister, Donna Marie Shields (Jimmy). Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Maykala Grace Nimmo, Garrett Alexander Nimmo, Bryson Cole Nimmo, Rylen Kenneth Gray, Samson Perry Saito, Jonah Glen Turner, Miles Henley Turner, and Elosie Grace King. on March 27, 2024.3

Roger loved Mae so much and we appreciate all the support and help she gave him. No memorial service will be given at this time because of the Corona Virus Covid-19. A celebration of life will be later in the summer at the New River Campground, Newport, Va. on July 5, 2020.3
