Mr. Ward served in the U. S. Navy in World War II as a Carpenter’s Mate, First Class. He was a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed building and gardening. He attended Christian View Pentecostal Holiness Church, Stoneville, N.C. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ethel Smith Ward of the home; daughters: Susan Ward Lester of Stoneville, N.C. and Charlotte Ward Anderson of Martinsville, Va; son, Alan Paul Ward of Martinsville, Va; brother, Raymond “Doc” Ward of Martinsville, Va; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2014 at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with Reverend Rick Wilkie officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Mr. Ward was born July 26, 1924, to the late Samuel Ralph Ward and Georgia Kate Padgett Ward. He attended school in Martinsville and operated Ward’s Store in Spencer for many years and was co-owner and operated Ward’s Garage. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the navy, was chairman of Christmas Cheer for several years and served as PTA president at Spencer Penn School. He was an avid golfer and resided in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for over 30 years. He was a member of Old Well Christian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iris K. Ward; a son, Billy R. Ward; sister, Myrtle W. Kendrick; and three brothers: Cecil Ward, C.E. “Bill” Ward, Sandy Ralph “Skinny” Ward. He is survived by three sons: John R. Ward of Ridgeway, James L. “Jimmy” Ward and Gene D. Ward of Spencer; a sister, Florence W. Puckett of Spencer; two brothers: Paul Ward of Martinsville and Raymond T. “Doc” Ward of Spencer; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Monday, April 1, 2013, at 2:00 at Old Well Christian Church in Spencer with Pastors Ron Hennis, Curt Ashley and his son, John Ward officiating. Burial followed in Old Well Christian Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were C.J. Grice, Matthew Dalton, Al Ward, Steve Kendrick, Tim Kellam, Nicholas Ward, Alan Ward, and Nakia Carter. Military rites were provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County with oldest son, John Ward, receiving the flag in honor of his brother, Jimmy Ward. on April 1, 2013.3

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Clayton Puckett; a son, Sandy Richard Puckett; four brothers: Cecil Ward, Bill Ward, Ralph “Skinny” Ward and Robert Ward; and a sister, Myrtle Kendrick. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a graduate of Spencer-Penn High School. Florence was a former co-owner/operator of Wards Store now known as C&B Market on Preston Road for fifty years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Clayton “Clay” (Neda) Puckett of Spencer; her grandson, Jon Clayton Puckett of Richmond; two brothers: Paul Ward and Raymond “Doc” Ward, both of Martinsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Roselawn Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Ramsey officiating the service. Interment will follow in the Ward Family Cemetery in Spencer. Pallbearers will be Jerry Ward, Al Ward, Steve Kendrick, Todd Mize, John Ward, Gary Franklin, Charlie Perdue, Stan Vosper and Patrick Belton.
