He was a faithful member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He retired from N & W Railroad in 1992 and served in the 92nd Army "Red Devils" Battalion during the Korean War.He was predeceased by his parents, Hollie and Carrie Saunders; brothers, John Edgar and Haywood Saunders; sisters, Ellen Brown and Hazel Stevens, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Miles.Surviving family includes his wife of 66 years, Cornelia Boulding Saunders; daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Terry Gordon and Libbye and Mike Taylor; granddaughters, Christine Carroll and husband, Aaron, and Melissa Welch; grandsons, Matt Miles; ex-son-in-law, Larry Miles; and nine great-grandchildren.Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuessday, March 8, 2016, at Lynn Haven Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Oblinger and the Rev. Bob Wayne officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. on March 7, 2016.3

Our beloved patriot, retired 1st Sergeant Riley Lee Turpin of Roanoke, Va., left this earthly world joining his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the age of 80. Riley was a benevolent man who loved fiercely and gave generously to his family and loved God and country. He was kind, loving, and an honest man. He enjoyed exercising, running miles every day. He often woke up early to go to the YMCA to work out at 5 a.m. and even went on his lunch time and again later the same day. He loved the Lord and was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church for many years. A true American Hero, he culminated over 40 years of active duty in our nation's military—the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and merchant Marine Corps. Riley was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on May 5, 1941, to the late Lewis William (Ben) Turpin and Frances Boulding Turpin. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Edd O. Hale Jr., and Lucille F. Hale. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Brenda Hale Turpin; brother, Edward W. Turpin and his family, David E. Turpin (Kristin) and LeEtta Turpin and her husband, Father James Detrich; his in-laws, Donald E. Hale (Gloria), Donald Dwayne Hale; Chandler Hale; Cindy Turner (Craig); and Caleb and Jacob Shockley. The family would like to give a special thank you to the many people who helped Brenda during this difficult time, especially Ray and Joyce Sarver, Charlie and Cheryl Turner, Dr. Chad DeMott and his staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion they gave to Riley; and to the many neighbors and friends for the thoughtful prayers who raised Riley up each day to his Lord. A Funeral Service honoring Riley's legacy will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Pastors Tommy Hurt and retired Pastor Eugene Koger officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton with Full Military Honors. on March 6, 2022.4

Loving mother of Charles, Robert, Virginia Brown and Alan Cannaday.Yvette worked for the United States Military in France, as a translator and telephone operator shortly after the war, where she met her husband Charles J. Cannaday. As a military wife her travels took her from Virginia to California and Utah to Mississippi. And through all those years of travel and relocating, she never met a stranger. Her biggest smile was when she was able to make someone laugh at one of her corny jokes.Whether she was tossing a baseball to her kids or enjoying her favorite activity of bowling, Yvette, was always there for her family and friends. Chaperoning for dances at the local high school or cracking them up on the local bowling leagues. As a volunteer, there was nothing she would not tackle.Yvette passed down to her children her laughter, and kind ways, her smile and caring soul. She will be missed by all that ever came in contact with her. Her heart was big until the very end.Yvette is survived by her husband Charles J. Cannaday; her children, Charles A, Robert A, Virginia Brown, and Alan Cannaday. on July 7, 2016.1
