Thomas Dinkins1,2,3

M, b. April, 1850, d. May 15, 1901
Thomas Dinkins was buried at Elwood City Cemetery, Elwood, Madison Co., Indiana.3 He was born in April, 1850 at Yadkin Co., North Carolina.4 He married Nancy Jane Hill, daughter of William Hill and Matilda "Tilda" Stephens, on February 7, 1876 at Tipton Co., Indiana.1 Thomas Dinkins died on May 15, 1901 at Elwood, Madison Co., Indiana, at age 51.2,3 He Thomas Dinkins, section foreman for Elwood Anderson & Lapel railway in this city, died of blood poisoning at his house at 2431 South B street at 11 o'clock last night. The funeral will be held at the family residence Friday morning at 9 o'clock with interment in the city cemetery. Mr. Dinkins was 51 years of age and leaves a wife and five children. His death is one of the saddest that local papers have called on to chronicle in months. A week ago yesterday he and his force of men were at work on a new switch which the company is building just south of the tin plate works. It was about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and the men were driving a hole through one of the heavy steel rails, a punch and a sledgehammer used in the operation. Following one stroke from the hammer a number of slivers of steel flew up from the rail and one of them found lodgment in Mr. Dinkins neck, just to the right of the chin. He was taken home and a physician removed the piece of steel. It was thought that the injured man would get along all right, and he paid little attention to the accident until a few days ago, when unmistakable indications of blood poisoning manifested themselves. All that skill and science could do for him was done, but the poison could not be eliminated, and he died after suffering the agony of a thousand deaths. Mr. Dinkins had been a section foreman for the E. A. & L. nearly ever since the company was organized. and was a man who was held in highest esteem by his associates. The section gang was given a holiday for today and tomorrow and will attend the funeral in a body. The sympathy of all who know them is extended to the family in their bereavement. on May 16, 1901.3
