Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Chestnut Knob Community Church at Layland with the Rev. Roy Tyree officiating. Burial will be in Layland Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church an hour before the service. Friends may call after 6 p.m today at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle. on August 9, 1972.2

She enjoyed her retirement by boating, camping, bowling, traveling, politics and spending time with her family. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 41 years, Wendell Deems; her son, Timothy Deems and wife, Nicole, of Beckley; her daughter, Tina Malcolm and husband, John, of Clemmons, N.C; her grandchildren, Megan Pack and husband, Chris, of Stanaford, Michael and Nicholas Deems of Beckley, and Cody, Katy and Cassidy Jean of Clemmons; great-grandchild, Caleb Matthew Paul Pack of Stanaford; a sister, Jo Ann Grindstaff of Lanark; her brother, Clarence G. Bowles Jr. and wife, Suzanne, of Lanark; a niece, Amy Grindstaff, and nephews, Steven Grindstaff of Lanark and Wade Bowles of Crab Orchard. Carol is also survived by many friends at the Beckley VA Medical Center and from her childhood that she dearly cherished. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church, Layland, with the Rev. Garlen Howington officiating. The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and one hour before service Saturday at the church. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. on May 22, 2008.1

He was in his 70th year. Born Nov. 20, 1941, in Ellwood City, Pa., he was the son of the late William H. Deems and late Mary B. Deems. A retired coal miner, Wendell enjoyed his retirement by boating, camping and spending time with his family. Wendell was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Carol Jean Deems; a brother, Charles Deems; and an infant sister, Shirley Deems. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved children, son, Timothy Deems and wife, Nicole, of Beckley; his daughter, Tina Malcolm and husband, John, of Lexington, N.C; he was the dear "Pa Paw" of Megan Pack, Michael and Nicholas Deems of Beckley; Cody, Katy and Cassidy Jean Malcolm of Lexington, N.C; the caring brother of Janet Poerschke and husband, Carl, and Patricia Stover of New Castle, Pa., Donald Deems and wife, Nancy, of Volant, Pa., Thomas Deems and wife, Trish, of Beaufort, S.C. and Kenneth Deems and wife, Gail, of Egg Harbor Twp, N.J; the fond brother-in-law of Clarence G. Bowles Jr. and wife, Suszanne, and sister-in-law, Jo Ann Grindstaff, both of Lanark; several nieces and nephews survive, among them a special niece and nephew, Steven and Amy Grindstaff. On Thursday, March 8th at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel we will remember the life of Wendell Paul Deems. The Reverend Doc Adkins will be officiating. Burial will follow at Layland Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours before the service. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. on March 7, 2012.3

Fondly known as Lee to everyone and affectionately known as boo boo to her great granddaughter, Emry, Lee was a member of Cross Roads Church in Lexington. She was retired from Beckley Newspaper in Beckley, WV. She loved the Lord, her family and her church. She enjoyed gardening, canning, camping and going out on the boat. She is preceded in death by her, husband, Howard Junior McDaniel in 1995, and brothers, Elmer, Kermit, Billy and Bobby Joe Shiflett.
