Stuart Alvin DeWease Jr. was buried at Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania.2 He was born on April 19, 1950.3,2 He died on August 5, 2008 at Waynesboro, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania, at age 58.3,2,4 He The deaths of two Waynesboro men from carbon monoxide poisoning Friday were ruled accidental this week by Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey Conner. Conner said in his report that Stewart Dewease Jr., 49, apparently forgot to turn off the car parked in the garage attached to his house when he came home from work shortly after 1 a.m. that day. Carbon monoxide leaking into the house killed him as he slept, as well as Keith Rohrer, 22, who was sleeping in the basement of the 614 Park St. home. Conner said Dewease was a brittle diabetic who suffered from frequent episodes of hypoglycemia, causing memory lapses. Brittle diabetes refers to patients who have dramatic, recurrent swings in glucose levels that often occur for no apparent reason, according to the Merck online medical library. Conner and Waynesboro Police learned during their investigation that when Dewease's shift ended at 1 a.m. Friday, he had trouble clocking out. A co-worker concerned about his mental status followed him to make sure he arrived home safely. Investigators decided Dewease must have left his car in the garage and forgot to turn it off, Conner said. Carbon monoxide then entered the basement through a hole in the wall where a concrete block had been removed to allow a sump pump to be used in the basement. From there it filtered up into the rest of the house, investigators concluded. Conner said Dewease was found in his bed at the opposite end of the house in a normal sleeping position by a family member who came to check on him. Firefighters found Rohrer in the basement where it appeared he had been sleeping, Conner said. He was found by a door, an indication that he had become disoriented as he tried to escape after realizing something was wrong. Conner said carbon monoxide levels were much higher in the basement than the main living level of the house. Autopsies also showed carboxy hemoglobin levels higher in Rohrer's blood than in Dewease's, according to Conner. An experiment by investigators showed that the running car could only be heard faintly in the kitchen next to the garage, Conner said. The garage door was shut when emergency personnel arrived on the scene Friday afternoon, Conner said. Graveside services are scheduled for Rohrer 11 a.m. today in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Waynesboro. Services for Dewease have not yet been announced. on August 20, 2008.4
