She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Marshall Newman, a sister, Elva Huff Hurst and two brothers, Carson T. Huff and Cannie Lee Huff. She was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church. She gaduated from Radford University and William & Mary. She had a long career in education as a teacher and guidance counselor. Surviving are, sister and brother-in-law, Dovie Huff and Shirley E. Cox of Hiwassee; sister-in-law, Tida M. Huff of Sylvatus; brother-in-law, A. Vernon Hurst of Draper and many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with Dr. Cortez Cooper and Rev. Preston O. Sartelle Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visiting will be this evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, Old Baltimore Road, Draper, Va., 24324. Born in Carroll County Jan. 23, 1915, he was the son of the late B. Rush Newman. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve and a retired employee of the Pulaski County School System. He was a member and elder of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Draper's Valley Puritan Club. He was a graduate of Radford College and George Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn. He was a past president of the Virginia Highway Safety Commission and the Pulaski County Safety Commission. Surviving are his wife, Canary Huff Newman, Draper; his mother, Nannie Marshall Newman, Dugspur; three sisters, Mrs. Harry "Missouri" Anderson, Alexandria; Mrs. Dayton "Polly" Gilbert, Front Royal and Mrs. Sebert "Effie" Hull; Buena Vista; and two brothers, Jesse Newman, Dugspur and Maury Newman, Hillsville. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hallett Hullinger and the Rev. John Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Draper's Valley Presbylerian Church cemetery. Visiting will be Sunday at Stevens Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. on October 25, 1981.3

Huff, daughter of Wyatt Blaine Huff and Della Myrtle Smith, circa 1945.1,2,3 Archie Vernon Hurst died on August 19, 2010 at Virginia at age 94.1,3,4 He Archie Vernon Hurst, of Hillsville, Va., was born on October 21, 1915, and passed away on August 19, 2010. Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents, E.C. (Connie) and Stella Jackson Hurst; his wife of 55 years, Elva Huff Hurst; brother, L. Carl Hurst; and sister, Jeanette Hurst Lane. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Oren and Doris Hurst, of Hillsville; and several nieces and nephews. Vernon enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 where he served as a bomb sight mechanic and bombardier with the 344th Bomb Squad. Following World War II, Vernon worked as a semi-truck driver and was an owner-operator of a motel located on US Highway #11. After the construction of interstate #81, he accepted a position with the Pulaski County School System as a school bus shop supervisor and remained there until his retirement. He was a member of the Pythagoras Lodge #239 F.M. & A.M. and The New River Shrine Club of Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Both Vernon and his wife, Elva, enjoyed the meetings and activities with their many friends of the Order of The Eastern Star. Vernon was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church for many years. A Graveside Service will be conducted at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, 2010, with the Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. on September 16, 2010.3
