Funeral services will be conducted at Highland United Methodist Church, Callaway on Thursday August 3, 2006 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeane Dunkum and Anne Snead officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday August 2, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Ronald, 644 Deyerle Knob Road, Rocky Mount. She was born February 2, 1917 in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Jones; daughter, Dolores Ann Micelli; parents, Ivan VanNattan and Anna A. VanNattan; and brothers, Bud and Robert VanNattan. Surviving are her children, Barbara Jean Yates (David), Joyce J. Aldridge (Eugene), Mary Margaret Dunn (Commie), Caroline West, Robert W. Jones (Gale), and Kenneth E. Jones (Joyce H.); 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Margaret retired from Cooper Wood Products and was a member of Gogginsville United Methodist Church and the Quilters Club. Funeral services will be conducted at Gogginsville United Methodist Church 11 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Stan Wright officiating with assistance by Rev. Mark Richardson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. on May 10, 2014.1

Surviving are two daughters, Gaphred Lea Evans and Geri Jones Grindle; a son-in-law, Bing Grindle; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. At her request, she will be cremated and her remains interred beside her husband at Mountain View Memorial Park in Franklin County. Visiting hours at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel will be on Thursday, May 6, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with Dr. Murphy D. Gaphred was born in Airpoint on Bent Mountain in Roanoke County, Virginia on February 19, 1922 to Elmer Lee and Gertrude M. Jones. She graduated from Jefferson High and worked in the N&W Railroad offices until World War II when she went to Norfolk to work the busy phones as an operator during the war. Gaphred married her sailor after the war and is survived by five children, Richard Evans and wife Bonnie of Roanoke, Cynthia Fitzgerald and husband Ed of Virginia Beach, Bob Evans of Duck, N.C., Reese Evans and wife Debbie of Kitty Hawk, and Jonathan Evans of Norfolk. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kim Reese of Grandy, N.C., Chris Evans of Ft. Lauderdale, Melissa Stevens of Virginia Beach, Ginger Stackhouse of Virginia Beach, Will and Lee Fitzgerald of Virginia Beach, Bobby Lee Evans of Duck, N.C., Katie Evans of Raleigh and a special grandson Tim. GGs grandchildren are Evan, Andrew and her red haired special Sarah. Gaphred earned two college degrees from TCC in 1985. She enjoyed working and reluctantly retired from the City of Virginia Beach at the age of 75. She enjoyed over 2,000 volunteering at the Marine Science Museum. She was recognized as one of the most active volunteers in the City of Virginia Beach. She has helped support several overseas missionaries, and was always there for her friends. Gaphred was a rock for her family, and a pillar in her church, but they had to share her passion with the General Federation of Womans Club. Her involvement began with Brambleton Jr. Womans Club in Roanoke 1952 and continued with Cape Henry Womans Club as past-president (1971-1973), and a life member. She will be remembered and missed by many. Her good works will be long felt. Arrangements are under the care and direction of A.L. Bailey Funeral Home, 1801 Baltic Ave., Virginia Beach, where the family will receive friends on Wed. from 6 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Cofield officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, a memoriam may be made to the Cape Henry Womans Club education scholarship fund.
