A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on Sept. 12, 1924 and was the daughter of the late Gilbert Howard and Gladys Steber Blankenship, the second of twelve children. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 36 years, Sherman Leslie Stables; her second husband of 12 years, Mason Chapman Lilly; three sisters, and four brothers. Sylvia was a faithful member of Central Christian Church in Augusta, Ga. while living with her daughter. An honorary member of American Legion Post 68 Ladies Auxiliary, she is a former “Woman of the Year” award recipient from that organization. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Linda Stables Tiller and husband, Ed of Narrows, Va; her son, Ronald Stables and wife, Carol of Rich Creek; four grandchildren, Edwin Tiller and wife, Lynn of North Augusta, S.C, Dee Sanborn and husband, Richard of Warrenville, S.C., Leslie Stables and wife, Lisa, and Sherman Lee Stables and companion, Kelli Ratcliff, all of Rich Creek; six great-grandchildren, Michael Stables, Lindsey Stables, Jessica Tiller, Ashley Tiller, Bryson Tiller and Tyler Sanborn; two sisters, Helen Greenlief of Pearisburg, Va., and Madeline Gautier of Narrows, Va; two brothers, Billy Blankenship and Gary Blankenship, both of Baltimore, Md; Mason Lilly’s children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and many special friends. Graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Narrows, Va. on March 30, 2012.¹ She died on March 30, 2012 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia, at age 87.^1,4

Surviving are her husband and the following sisters and brothers, Mrs. Lee Bonds, Christiansburg; Frank Vaught, Bellville, N.J; Earl Vaught, Richmond, Ohio: and Jess Vaught, Narrows. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. on February 14, 1951.⁴

He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include his widow, Bertha Mae Jones; two sons, Charles Jackson Jones of McComas, Joseph E. Jones Jr. of McComas; one daughter, Barbara Jean Hall of McComas; one brother, William Jones of Bluefield; one sister, Myrtle Davis of Princeton; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. on July 1, 1972.⁷

Born in McComas, she was a daughter of Maggie Thompson Gilmore of Bluefield, and the late Walter Gilmore. She was a life-long resident of McComas, was of the Holiness faith, and a member of V.F.W. Post #3112. She was preceded in death by her husband in June 1972. Survivors include two sons, Charles "Jack" and Joseph E. "Joe" Jones Jr., both of McComas; one daughter, Mrs. Elbert (Barbara Jean) Hall of McComas; two brothers, Walter and Randolph Gilmore, both of Bluefield; seven sisters, Mrs. Virginia Murphy of Beckley, Mrs. Frances Poe of Bluefield, Mrs. Betty Walsh of Princeton, Mrs. Barbar Jean Griffith and Mrs. Jo Ann Everhart, both of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Louise Homer of Merritt Island, Fla., and Mrs. Mildred Tackas of Fairfield, Conn; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell. Pallbearers: Phil Thompson, Cecil Tooley, Trig Graham, Ernest Bailey, Steve and Roger Poore, J.D. Graham and Ralph Taylor. on May 2, 1983.²
