     Esther Emaline Kahle was buried at Clarion Cemetery, 2nd Avenue, Clarion, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania.4,3 She was born on August 21, 1894 at Mechanicsville, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.3 As of September 1, 1912,her married name was Slater.3 She married Wayne Harrison Slater, son of William Harrison "Harry" Slater and Sarah Jane Lyon, on September 1, 1912.1,2,3 Esther Emaline Kahle died on February 28, 1970 at Clarion, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania, at age 75.3 She Mrs. Esther Emaline Slater, 75, of Corsica was pronounced dead on arrival at Clarion Hospital on Saturday. She was born August 21, 1894 at Mechanicsville, the daughter of Wilbur and Emma Ebbinger [sic] Kahle. On September 1, 1912, she married Wayne H. Slater, who survives. Mrs. Slater attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Isabelle Caravan of Sulton, N.Y; Mrs. Ruth Jury of Corsica and Mrs. Anita Brown of San Francisco, Calif; four sons, Wilbur Slater of Corsica, Harry Slater of Shippenville, RD 1, Richard Slater of Sacramento, Calif; and Roger Slater of Youngstown, Ohio; three brothers, Lawrence Kahle of Clarion, Ralph Kahle of Oil City and Max Kahle of Cleveland, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Private funerals services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Goble Funeral Home, Clarion, with Rev. Robert Johnson, pastor of the Kahletown Community Church. Interment will be in Clarion Cemetery. on March 2, 1970.3

He was a member of the American Rapid Relay League. Mr. Slater was married in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 30, 1943, to Helen Mae Partridge, who died March 12, 2000. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Slater Farley and her husband, William, of Brookville; three sons, David A. Slater and his wife, Margaret, of Murraysville, Karl E. Slater of Downers Grove, Ill., and Jan W. Slater and his wife, Lorrie, of Penn Hills; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also is survived by three brothers, Harry A. Slater and his wife, Debby, of Shippenville, Richard E. Slater and his wife, Arlene, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Roger H. Slater and his wife, Shirley, of Poland, Ohio; and two sisters, Ruth L. Slater of Corsica and A. Isabel Slater Caravan and her husband, Vince, of Fulton, N.Y. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Slater was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon Mae Slater, and a sister, Anita Slater Brown. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the McKinney Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Brookville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Maynard Grunstra officiating. Interment will be in Pisgah Cemetery, Corsica. Memorials may be made to the Brookville Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, Main and White streets, Brookville, 15825. on June 20, 2001.3

He worked for Chicago Pneumatic and after his retirement he ran the Slater Cycle Shop. He was a member of the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church in Reidsburg. Mr. Slater was a member of the Golden Glove Boxer and enjoyed hunting, gardening, archery and his dog. On Aug. 8, 1949, he married Margaret Smith, who preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2006. He is survived by two sons, Harry Slater, Jr., of Turkey City, and Terry Slater and his wife Robin of Venus; a brother, Dick Slater of Arizona; a sister, Ruth Slater, of Brookville; his good friend Charlie Vogel; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Allen Slater; a brother, Roger Slater; a sister, Isabelle Caravan; a granddaughter, Sharron Slater; and a daughter-in-law, Effie Slater. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, with the Rev. S. Clair Heitzenrater officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville.

She was a very religious person and a member of the Alpha Assembly of God in Clarion and was very active in various aspects of church life. She particularly enjoyed her role as a Sunday school teacher. She was an avid reader and an animal lover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilbur Wayne Slater, Harry Alvin Slater and Richard Eugene Slater; and two sisters, Anna Isabel Caravan and Anita May Brolon. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Clarion Cemetery in Clarion with Pastor Randy L. Evans officiating. Interment will be in Clarion Cemetery, Clarion. on July 19, 2011.3

The fourth of seven children, she born September 10, 1921, in Clarion, the daughter of the late Wayne and Esther Slater. She was married to Vincent Caravan, he survives. Mrs. Caravan attended Clarion State Teachers College where she earned a bachelors degree in education. She subsequently attended the University of Wisconsin and later completed her masters in education at the State University College at Oswego, N.Y. Mrs. Caravan retired as a teacher, spending most of her career in the Fulton School District teaching first and second grades. Mrs. Caravan served as an officer in the Fulton Teachers' Association, secretary of the board of the Greater Fulton United Way, and was an avid bowler, active in the Fulton Women's Bowling Association for many years. Following her retirement from teaching in 1976, she spent several years in administrative and supervisory roles with The Valley News, a community newspaper in Fulton, owned by the Caravan family. She also authored two books on family genealogy as well as two children's books. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Ronald Caravan and his wife, Nancy, of Phoenix, N.Y; granddaughters Michelle Stockschlaeder and her husband, Herbert, of Buffalo, N.Y., Adrienne Gabalski and her husband, Joseph, of Virginia, and Lisa Caravan of Rochester, N.Y., and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Harry Slater of Shippenville and Richard Slater of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and a sister, Ruther Slater of Clarion. A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Sugar Funeral Home in Fulton, N.Y. following calling hours. Internment will be held Friday, April 27, 2007, in Clarion Cemetery. Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St., Clarion, was in charge of the arrangements. on April 26, 2007.3

Zemany of San Francisco, Calif., Paige Lawson and her husband John of Newport News, Va., Scott and Kent Slater of Virginia Beach; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tess and Jack Lawson; a niece and nephew, Kathy and Richard St. Amant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church by Father Michael Breslin. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A Rosary will be said Wednesday at 7 p.m. followed by a visitation from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Star of the Sea Building Fund. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. on October 31, 2000.3

Mrs. Slater was born in Pennsylvania to the late Thomas and Helen Crowe. She was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church and the Star of the Sea Women's Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband, George A. Slater. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Suzanne Van Kirk of Virginia Beach; son, George A. Slater III of Florida; sister, Martha Crowe of Colorado; grandchildren, Scott Slater and wife Rebecca, Kent Slater, Paige Lawson and husband John and Chester Zemany; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tess, and Jack Lawson and Ian and Brandon Slater. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Star of the Sea Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Esteban DeLeon officiating. A private interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Women's Guild at Star of the Sea Parish. on January 30, 2011.1

"Red" Van Kirk, 66, of the 1200 block of Mossy Oaks Court, a retired Navy lieutenant commander and real estate broker, died June 8, 1993, in his residence. Mr. Van Kirk was born in Greene County, Pa. He retired from the Navy with 20 years of service and was the retired owner of Anchor Realty. He was first president of the Tidewater Board of Realtors (1981) and past president of Red Wing Golf Association. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he received his B.S. degree in 1948. He received his M.S. from George Washington University and graduated from "Top Gun" then known as the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit. Survivors include his wife, Suzanne L. Van Kirk; one daughter, Lindley Van Kirk of Franklin, Va; two stepdaughters, Paige Lawson of Newport News and Sandi Rice Helms of Salem, Va; one son, Robert W. Van Kirk III of Canonsburg, Pa; two stepsons, Chester A. Zemany of California and Robert M. Rice of Virginia Beach; and three stepgrandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, by the Rev. Jack A. Lawson Jr. Entombment will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park Mausoleum. on June 9, 1993.2
