Clarence Reynolds Whisner was buried at Clarion Cemetery, 2nd Avenue, Clarion, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania.3,4 He Clarence R. Whisner, aged 47, life-long resident of Clarion, was found dead in the basement of his home on Merle street Tuesday evening about 5:30, with a self-inflicted bullet hole through his heart. In a brief note written to his wife he merely bid her goodbye and said that he was “leaving this world.” The tragedy was discovered by Mrs. Whisner, who, upon returning from her day’s work, found her husband lying face-up on the coal pile in the cellar, a shotgun reclining across his lifeless body. He was clad in a grey flannel shirt, which bore a huge blood stain, dark trousers and bedroom slippers and death had apparently been instantaneous, his face being perfectly calm with no sign of suffering. Mrs. Whisner called a neighbor A. L. Stroup, who summoned Dr. S. J. Lackey and the county coroner, Dr. Gale H. Walker. After examining the body Coroner Walker stated that Whisner had been dead about an hour and a half when found. The weapon used by the victim was a 12-gauge single-barrel shotgun containing a 1-ounce lead ball, which entered the chest on a downward slant, pierced the heart and passed entirely through the body. Although it is not possible to reconstruct exactly what occurred, it is believed that Whisner assumed a half-sitting position on the coal, propped the gun against his chest and pulled the trigger. Friends and relatives of the dead man said that he had been despondent for some time, brooding over ill health and financial worries caused by unemployment, although at the time of his death he was working on the Wood street repaving job as a night watchman. When Mrs. Whisner, who is employed at the home of Mrs. F. J. Maffett on Wood street, left for work Tuesday morning her husband seemed his normal self, but he had talked peculiarly at times of late, she said. Mr. Stroup, a close friend of Mr. Whisner’s, called on him about eleven o’clock and stayed until one, and he, too, noticed nothing unusual in his manner. Coroner Walker pronounced the death a suicide and stated that no inquest would be necessary. The deceased is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Charles O’Neill, Liberty street. Four brothers and one sister are also left to mourn his passing. They are James of Rockaway, N. J., Merle, Edward and Archie of Clarion and Mrs. Milton Black, Miola. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Whisner home, Rev. W. P. Murray, pastor of the M. E. church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Clarion cemetery.
