He was 32 this month. He was accompanying Wray Wehrman jr., (sic) Superior livestock trucker, to Amarillo with a load of hogs and had stopped at a restaurant at Dumas, about 35 miles north of their destination. When Kenneth was a long time in returning to the truck, restaurant employees called Mr. Wehrman, who was asleep in the cab of the truck, and they broke into the rest room and found the Nora man dead. Mr. Jensen was born and raised in the Nora community. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jensen and graduated from the Nelson schools in 1945. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Littrell of Nelson, three children, Gregory, 11, Janet, 8, and Debbie, 5; his parents, one brother, Jack, of Holstein, and two sisters, Mrs. Walster Williams of Nora, and Mrs. George Hanthorn of Oklahoma. on November 12, 1959.⁸

     Nellie Irene Janssen Nellie Irene Littrell, the daughter of William and Nora (Kramer) Janssen, was born on February 25, 1928 near Mt. Clare, Nebraska. She passed away on March 5, 2015 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 87 years and 8 days. As a young girl the family moved to Gentry, Missouri where she spent most of her childhood years, returning to Nelson her senior year of high school and graduating from Nelson High School. She attended Kearney State Teachers College. Nellie was united in marriage to Robert Littrell on December 31, 1950, in Concordia, Kansas. This union was blessed with 2 children, Jon and Gail. Nellie and Bob lived most of their lives in Nelson, where Bob was owner and operator of Littrell’s Inc., a petroleum transportation company in Nelson and she worked for the Public Power District and also the school as a secretary. She was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, PEO, the American Legion Auxiliary, UWF, Eastern Star, Library Board, Red Hats and a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. She enjoyed horses, camping, golfing, Nebraska football, doing needle work and sewing, traveling and working in her garden. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert on June 24, 1994; her brother, Dale Janssen and two sisters, Ruth Wehrman and Lorene Adamson. Nellie is survived by her son, Jon Littrell and wife Pat of Roca, Nebraska; and daughter, Gail Littrell of Lincoln, Nebraska; 3 granddaughters, Casey, Caitlin and Tara Littrell all of Lincoln, Nebraska; along with a host of other relatives and friends.      Betty Josephine Eckles was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Linn Co., Oregon.⁹ She was born on December 15, 1922 at Nuckolls Co., Nebraska.³ As of March 28, 1942,her married name was Pittam.¹⁰ She married Gerald Thomas "Jerry" Pittam on March 28, 1942 at Kansas.^10,5,7 Betty Josephine Eckles died on September 5, 2013 at Salem, Marion Co., Oregon, at age 90.⁵ She Betty Josephine Pittam, the daughter of W.L. and Verna Eckles, was born in Nelson, Nebraska on December 15, 1922. She passed away September 5, 2013 at Orchard Heights Memory Care facility in Salem, Oregon. She was 90 years old. Betty graduated high school in Wilbur, NE and soon after, at age 19, married her true love, Gerald Thomas Pittam of Nora, NE. They lived in Clay Center NE and Jerry worked at the Ammo Dump during the early part of WWII. They then migrated, by railroad, to Oregon, living in the tiny burg of Marion Forks. Betty built kitchen cabinets for their little shack while Jerry logged. Later they moved to the Detroit/Idanha area and there their three children were born, Sherry Kay, Patricia Ann, and David Joe. Jerry stopped logging and went into the insurance business, Betty becoming his secretary. They moved operations to Mill City, but their friends from Idanha drove down many weekends to continue the card parties they were so fond of. Betty's children and grandchildren remember the great food and many weekend parties that Betty loved to give. In 1965 Jerry built Betty the home of her dreams on the North Santiam River, and later said he didn't think she'd ever leave the house or come to work again she loved it so much. Betty and Jerry were married 50 years when Jerry died in 1992. After Jerry's death Betty continued to have big family Christmas parties and though her children had Christmas at their own homes also, the grandchildren decided the real Christmas was at Grandma's. On Betty's 80th birthday, her children threw her a party and just about the whole town of Mill City showed up, plus relatives from all over Oregon, Washington and California. Several people remarked about the fact that Betty Pittam was a real lady. In her 80's Betty sold her home and moved to Monmouth, OR to be nearer to her children. Betty's oldest daughter, Sherry Kay, lived just a couple blocks away and took excellent care of her mother for many years. All of Betty's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren adored her. She wasn't just a grandma, she was a grand lady all around. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her youngest brother. She is survived by her three children and spouses, six grandchildren and spouses, and fourteen great grandchildren. Private family services. on September 11, 2013.⁵

He was born in Cadams, Neb. He married Betty J. Pittam on March 28, 1942, in Kansas. He moved to the Santiam Canyon area in 1943, and owned and operated the Jerry Pittam Insurance Agency for 35 years. He enjoyed traveling and riding horses, and as a young man was a member of the Mill City Lions Club and the Mill City Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Sherry K. Pittam of Washington D.C., and Patricia A. Rasmussen of Albany; son, David J. of Salem; and six grandchildren. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services. Private family interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. on November 11, 1992.¹

     Wilma Maxine Eckles Wilma Maxine McCutchan, the daughter of William and Verna (Littrell) Eckles, was born on July 21, 1925 in Nelson, Nebraska. She passed away on January 30, 2017 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 91 years, 6 months, 9 days. Maxine was one of five children; she was a Plattsmouth High graduate, and a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson. On February 14, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Nelson, she was united in marriage to Robert Allen McCutchan and this union was blessed with a daughter and son. While working in the tax preparation field, Maxine attended Central Nebraska Community College in Hastings, and H & R tax preparation school. She also was a bank teller, farm wife and mother. In her spare time, Maxine loved and was an avid gardener and canned and pickled much of her crop. She gave boxes of her home canned produce to family and friends every year at Christmas. The unanimous favorite was her crunchy pink ripe cucumber pickles. Maxine loved her cats; she had many on the farm and several different ones after moving to town. She enjoyed reading and working jigsaw puzzles. She collected glass figurines her whole life. Her biggest collections were sugar and creamers, owls, and blue glass. She will be remembered by her wit, her laugh and her ornery sense of humor. Maxine was a member of the Nelson Order of Eastern Star, Women’s Club, Nelson American Legion Axillary (sic), and Band Mothers and was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader. During her lifetime, Maxine lived in Nelson, Hastings, Edgar, Wilbur, and Plattsmouth, living on the farm North East of Nelson and moving into Nelson in 1989. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bob on May 30, 2005; brother John Wendell; sister Betty Jo Pittam and husband Gerald; sisters-in-law, Lenore Eckles, Alice Eckles, and Evelyn Luth and husband Joe; niece, Jolyn Luth Walker. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Susan McCutchan and her son, William “Bill” Walter McCutchan and wife Debbie all of Nelson, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Joseph William and Chantel Rose McCutchan; and one great granddaughter, Bella Rose McCutchan; siblings, Phillip Virgil Eckles and wife Gerry of Nelson, Nebraska, William Louis Eckles Jr. of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Eckles of Benedict, Nebraska; and brother-in-law Duane McCutchan and wife Gayle of Reedly, California; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Pallbearers were Joseph McCutchan, Dick Eckles, Daniel Eckles, Bob Eckles, Nancy Eckles and Adam Nielsen.      Robert Allen McCutchan Robert Allen McCutchan, the son of Irvin and Isa (Harris) McCutchan, was born on a farm October 23, 1926 near Nelson, Nebraska. He passed away on May 30, 2005 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 78 years 7 months and 7 days. Robert attended the Bethel Rural School north of Nelson, Nebraska and graduated from the Nelson High School. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was united in marriage to Wilma Maxine Eckles on February 14, 1954 at the Nelson Presbyterian Church and to this union was born two children. Robert was a lifelong Nuckolls County Resident, a member of the Nelson American Legion Post #187 and the Nelson Masonic Lodge AF & AM #77. For many years he sold Cargill Seed and raised many types of livestock on his farm including Dairy and Holsteen cattle, hogs and sheep and his favorite, the one he helped his daughter Betty and grandchildren, Joey and Chantel raise were, Longhorns. Robert was an avid card player and was very proud to be one of the first area farmers to do "No-Till" farming and also raising one of the first crops of sunflowers in the area. He and Maxine moved to Nelson in 1989 from the farm and on February 18, 2004 he entered the Nelson Good Samaritan Center in Nelson, Nebraska. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and one sister and brother in law, Evelyn and Joe Luth along with a niece Jolyn Luth Walker. He is survived by his wife Maxine of Nelson, Nebraska, daughter Betty McCutchan of Nelson, Nebraska and son, William Bill McCutchan and wife Susan of Nelson, Nebraska. Two grandchildren, Joseph and Chantel McCutchan of Nelson, Nebraska and one brother Duane McCutchan and wife Gayle of Kingsburg, California along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pallbearers were Joseph McCutchan, Mark McCutchan, Jim Harris, Jim Menke, Steve Rakosky, and Gordon Meyer. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Ferebee, Eldrick Grummert, Arthur Sole, Frank Harris and Ralph Meyer. Eckles, age 77 of Benedict, NE. died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Lincoln, NE. He was born June 23, 1929 at Nelson, NE to William L. and Verna (Littrell) Eckles and graduated from Nelson High School. John was the assistant area manager for LT&T for over 35 years in York before retiring to Benedict in 1984. He was formerly Senior Warden at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in York before joining St Andrews Episcopal Church in Seward. He was a member of the York American Legion Post, V.F.W. and the Noon Sertoma Club. John also enjoyed camping, fishing and most of all traveling with friends and family. On June 27, 1954 he was married to Elizabeth Lyster at Greeley, Co. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Benedict; two brothers William Jr and his wife Alice Eckles of Lincoln and Phillip Eckles of Nelson, NE; two sisters Betty Jo Pittam of Mills City, OR and Maxine C. McCutchan of Nelson. Also surviving is a brother in law Norman C. Lyster of Greeley, CO; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers in law and a sister in law. Inurnment will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday in the Nelson Cemetery in Nelson. on July 27, 2006.⁵
