Lee H. Pauley1,2,3,4

M, b. circa 1901, d. January 21, 1941
Lee H. Pauley was born circa 1901 at West Virginia.2 He married Goldie Marie Willis, daughter of Encebious/Eucobious Finkles/Fulkes "Earl" Willis and Cora Ellen Terry, circa 1926.1,2 Lee H. Pauley died on January 21, 1941 at Candy Run, Scioto Co., Ohio; Murdered by his wife after she accused him of abuse. She plead guilty to manslaughter.3,1,4 He Portsmouth, Ohio, January 21 - A thirty-year-old confessed husband-slayer sobbingly related to Sheriff Earl Brandel today a story of how her forty-two-year-old male made her drag logs and pull a plow. Brandel said Mrs. Goldie Pauley walked into his office and told of firing a shotgun charge into the back of Lee Pauley, Work Project Administration worker, in their isolated Candy Run farm home 15 miles north of here, before the eyes of their fourteen-year-old daughter, Ollie. Before the slaying, Brandel quoted Mrs. Pauley, the husband threatened to kill his wife, their five children, and a neighbor's family, but went to sleep after she hid his shotgun shells. Detained on a technical charge of investigation, Mrs. Pauley said in a statement to Brandel: "My husband was extremely jealous and constantly beat me. Monday he asked me which one of
the neighbor boys I liked best. One of the boys had written notes to Ollie asking her to marry him. I told him I liked the boy. Then he started drinking and grabbed the shotgun, yelling that he would kill me. Ollie and Alice woke up and begged him to put the gun away. He told them to get back to bed or he'd kill them too. I got the shotgun shells, and when he couldn't find the shells he threatened to stick a knife in mv heart. "Then he said, I'll let you live until morning, then I'll kill you and the John Keaton family. He lay down on the bed in the front room. I went into the rear bedroom and loaded the shotgun. His back was still towards me. I pulled the trigger. He didn't move or make a
sound. "Ollie saw the shooting. I sat down and waited until daylight. I got breakfast for the children and sent Ollie and Alice for help." Mrs. Pauley said that last August,
after undergoing an operation, she was forced to drag logs and pull the plow with Ollie.
A relative drove Mrs. Pauley to the Sheriff's office 11 hours after th midnight shooting. Besides Ollie and Alice, who is 13, the children are Rachel, 10, Edgar, 7, and Raymond, 5. Calmly, Ollie told Sheriff Brandel of the slaying. She said that her mother removed shotgun shells from the customary place but, instead of hiding them, gave them to Ollie. "Did you see your mother shoot your father? Brandel asked Ollie. "Yeh, I watched her." "What did he do.?" "Just laid there." " When did you take him off he couch ?" "Must have been about 3." "Was your father dead?" "Yeh." "How did you know?" "Well, he was beginning to get stiff." "Did your mother and father fight much?" "Yeh, some." "Whose fault do you think it was?" "Father's." on January 22, 1941.4
