A Command Sgt Major having retired from the 198th Sig Battalion in Newport, he worked for the U.S. Army National Guard for 20 years. Michael was a proud and decorated serviceman, receiving Army Commendation Medals in 1981, 1989, and 1990, the Army Achievement Medal in 1986, the Meritorious Service Medal in October of 1990, and the Order of Griffin head medal in 1990. A 1965 graduate of H. Fletcher Brown Technical High School, he went on to work for the Chrysler Parts Depot of Newark until retiring after 37 years of commendable service. He had most recently worked for Somerford Place and TCI Builders. He was a member of the UAW Local 404 and the Brookbend Civic Association, where he held several positions over the last 20 years. An avid archer, Michael also enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He found notable joy in time spent at his beach vacation home in Cape May, NJ. In addition to being active in the boy scouts for over 40 years, he also coached baseball, soccer, basketball, and football for New Castle County. A kind and loving person, Michael will be deeply missed by the many lives he touched. In addition to his parents, Virgil and Winogene (Paxton) Rogers of Elsmere, Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Loretta E. (Ignudo) Rogers; children, Michele Wayland and her husband Edward, Renee Torres, and Brian Rogers and his wife Kathi, all of Newark; grandchildren, Nicholas, Eddie, Maria, Sophia, Juliana, Emilia, and Carmen; sisters, Mary Ann Rogers, Connie Huffman, and Brenda McElroy and her husband Kenny; brothers, Ralph Rogers and his wife Pat of Maryland, and Terry Rogers of Elsmere; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and in-laws, Ed and Clara Ignudo of Wilmington, Albert and Emilia Feeley of Wilmington, and Anthony and Lydia Ignudo of Newark. Her job that she loved most was teaching children at Wilmington Church of God. Her favorite was the teen class. Some in her class became ministers and others continued in her work of teaching God’s word to others. As she walked through the gates, she was met by her husband, Jimmy Huffman; her parents, Virgil and Winogene Rogers; her brothers, Michael and Terry; her sister, MaryAnn; and on March 3, 2021 her brother, Ralph, joined them. She left behind her daughters, Ivy Proffitt (Eddie), Brandi Huffman and her beloved granddaughter, Justice Grace Proffitt. She is also survived by her sisters, Brenda McElroy (Kenny) and Felicia Rogers Bireley (Chris); her sister-in-law, Loretta Rogers; and many nieces and nephews. Services for Connie will be held at the Delaware Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.4 Her married name was Huffman.1 She married Jimmy Lee Huffman.1,4 Rev. "Jim" Samples on December 23, 1914 at Clay Co., West Virginia.7,5 Emma Mae Burdette died on May 19, 1953 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 60.1,4,5 She Mrs. Emma Mae Samples, 60, of this Clay county community, died yesterday in Charleston Memorial hospital after a long illness. Surviving are her husband, James; two sons, Rosco of Procious, and Clifton of Canton, O; one sister, Mrs. Henry Samms of Precious, and two brothers, Webster and William Burdette, both of Procious. Burial will be in Samms cemetery near the church. on May 20, 1953.5

"Jim" Samples died on October 26, 1959 at Procious, Clay Co., West Virginia, at age 69.7,8,5 He James Samples, 69, died this morning at his home at Procious after a long illness. Survivors include a daughter Miss Dorothy Samples of Procious; two sons, Roscoe of Procious and Clifton of Canton, Ohio; five sisters, Mrs. Martha Samples, Mrs. Minnie Mullins and Mrs. Fronia Sams of Procious, Mrs. Poria Stump of Cooper Creek and Miss Myrtle Samples address unknown; and one grandchild. The body is at the Clay Funeral Home at Clay. on October 29, 1959 at Procious, Clay Co., West Virginia.8
