He was the owner of Bennett 's Tire Service, Inc., served on the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, was past President of the Rocky Mount Lions Club, member of the Franklin Co. Retail Merchants Association and was a member of the Rocky Mount Town Council for eighteen years, twelve of which he served as Vice-Mayor. A longtime member of the Rocky Mount Christian Church, having served as Elder and at his death was Elder Emeritus, He had served as Sunday School Superintendent and as Sunday School Teacher; he was a past member of the Rocky Mount Fire Department, having served as Chief. He served many years on the Rocky Mount Industrial Development Authority. Wayne Strickler on July 9, 2005. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Merle Metts, Richmond; several nieces and nephews. Born in Franklin County, Va., she was the last survivor of the nine children of Georgia Alice Lancaster Strickler and William Thomas Strickler. She is survived by her daughter, June Metts Dennis and son-in-law, William R. Dennis III, of Richmond. She is also survived by a beloved extended family including numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren in-law and great-grandchildren in-law. Mrs. Metts had careers as a homemaker, also in retail and education and was an accomplished seamstress. She was active in her church and in volunteer activities, including the American Red Cross and most recently, the child development center at Westminster-Canterbury. She was an amazing story teller, bringing to life in vivid detail the era of which she was part. Mrs. Metts loved people, especially children, and sought to make friends wherever she went. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2010, from Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Long officiating. Interment will follow in Glade Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. August 3, 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pleasant Hill Methodist Building Fund, Rocky Mount. on July 23, 1996.2

His ashes will be scattered at the Lone Spruce Mine in Boundary. He was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Franklin County, Va. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. He moved to Alaska in April 1960 from Rocky Mount, Va., and worked for the civil service at Elmendorf Air Force Base until his retirement in 1972. He also worked as a gold miner for 20 years in Boundary. Mr. Strickler is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet Strickler; children, Linda Kissee, William Strickler, Alice Moore and Roger Strickler; grandchildren, Ryan Strickler, Ashley Strickler, Heather Moore, Jonathan Strickler, Dawn (Kissee) Barrett and Corinne (Kissee) Rollman; and great-grandchild, Brenna Rollman. The family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Anchorage, 3305 Arctic Blvd., Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory. on July 15, 1999.3

(Pete) and Annetta Sowers of Christiansburg; nine grandchildren, Ronnie, Gilbert and Jimmy Shelton, Peggy Nolen, Wanda Johnson, Sandra Sowers, Linda Strickler, Dale and Billy Strickler; one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter, one stepgrandson; one sister, Mrs. Arlie Moles of Hillsville; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ethel Moles of Willis; several nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Verndith Boyd of Floyd and Alda Taliaferro of Roanoke. Funeral will be Friday 3:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home with Dr. Alton L. Griffin and the Rev. L. V. Dehart officiating with interment in the Alderman Cemetery, Willis. The family will receive friends 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home. on October 29, 1992.1
