Col. Leon Malcolm Burgess died on July 5, 2002 at South Carolina at age 85.1,3,5 He Lt. Colonel Leon Malcom Burgess, United States Air Force (Retired) died July 5, 2002. Colonel Burgess was born August 2, 1916 in Collinsville, Alabama. He was the son of the late Claude M. Burgess and Theodosia Glazner Burgess. Colonel Burgess began his Air Force career in 1943 when he entered Navigator Training. During World War II, he served in the Western Pacific as a Navigator/Radar Operator aboard B-29's. He flew 29 combat missions in the air offensive against Japan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters while serving with the 19th Bombardment Group in the Marianas Islands during this period. He was in the inactive reserves from 1948 until 1951. He was graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Personnel Management. He also obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri. He resumed his Air Force career flying on the B-47 at Pinecastle AFB, Florida. During this period he was a member of the crew that flew the historic non-stop B-47 mission, 11,450 miles from Guam to Morocco in 22 hours and 50 minutes. In 1960, he was assigned to Barkdale AFB, Louisiana with the Combat Evaluation Group. In 1964, he transferred to the Minuteman Missile program at Whitemen AFB, Missouri where he served as the commander of the 508th Strategic Mission Squadron. He finished his military career as the Assistant Director of Operations at the 44th Missile Wing, Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. After 30 years in the military, Colonel Burgess retired in 1973. He devoted his time to family, volunteer work, gardening, golf and church activities. Colonel Burgess was a Master Navigator with more than 6000 flying hours. He also held the Master Missileman Badge. Other military awards include an additional Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with two bronze service stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. Survivors include his wife, Helen Sue Weddle Burgess; daughters, Lt. Colonel Laura B. Stevens, Lt. Colonel Lucinda L. Carlson, Merry Burgess-Boyd and Commander Melody L. Bock; sons, Major Dean A. Burgess and Claude W. Burgess; 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Visitation will be at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, July 8, 2002. The memorial service, with full military honors, will be at New Prospect Baptist Church, Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend John Rogers and Dr. Lewis E. Greene officiating. The family requests no flowers. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend, Norman Bean Harvey. Jerry will forever be missed by close friends and family. Ken was born in West Virginia on February 8, 1935 to the late Velma and Stacy Graham. He graduated from Towson High School in Maryland and then spent many years in Roanoke, VA. Later he resided in Knoxville, TN, until he moved to Charlotte, NC, in 1983. There he met his wife Debbie, who had purchased a house from him. Ken was a home builder and developer who truly loved his work. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie; his two daughters, Joanne Jordan and Olivia Jordan Marone and her husband, Nathan. Also left to cherish his memory are his precious sister and brother-in-law, Lorine and Louis Kleim. Ken's brother and sister-in-law, Basil and Evelyn Graham are also surviving. There are many cherished aunts, nephews, and nieces who will always fondly remember him. Ken was an active member of Calvary Church, and he had a passion for helping the homeless people of Charlotte. During Ken's illness, his primary focus was telling everyone about the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Through Ken's struggle with cancer. Basil Ray Graham was born on July 19, 1925 at Herndon, Wyoming Co., West Virginia.5 He married Evelyn Virginia Wagner on January 20, 1946 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.4,6,9 Basil Ray Graham died on September 11, 2015 at Virginia at age 90.4 He Basil Ray Graham, a long-time resident of Smith Mountain Lake, in Goodview, Va., passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015, following the death of his beloved wife, Evelyn, in June of this year. Born in 1925 in Herndon, W.Va., to Stacy Aaron Graham and Velma Poff Graham Hylton, Basil had three siblings, Amos Graham, Lorine Graham Kleim and Kenneth Graham. Basil served in World War II in the United States Navy as part of the Pacific Campaign. Following the conclusion of the war and his honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, Evelyn (Wagner) Graham. They enjoyed 69 rich and happy years together. Basil was an electrician, a member of the IBEW, and an active member of the Melrose Masonic Lodge. An avid golfer, Basil was a member and supporter of Blue Hills Golf Club and enjoyed the sport wherever he traveled. He passed his love of golfing to his grandchildren. Basil was a devoted family man with a kind soul. Basil is survived by his daughters, Velvet Hammond (husband, David) and Anne Sumpter, who reside in Roanoke. Basil is also survived by four adoring grandchildren, Scott Hammond, Stacey Hammond Beard, Graham Sumpter, all of Roanoke, and James Sumpter of Little Rock, Ark; and three great-grandchildren, Lyle, Lauren and Grayson. The family thanks the wonderful staffs at Pheasant Ridge Senior Living Community, Good Samaritan Hospice, and Dr. Timothy Beirne for their kindness and loving care. on September 15, 2015.4

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society. on November 14, 2001.1
