Marie Wilson, 14, of Goodview, Virginia, departed this life suddenly on Saturday, July 16, 2005 to go to be with the Lord, her mommy and Aunt Pat. Skylar was such a beautiful, smart, funny, and talented young lady who loved writing poems, swimming, playing the clarinet, keyboard and singing in the church choir. Thank you to Kerry and Angi for encouraging her to share her talents. She was grateful to you both. Skylar also enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved dancing with her daddy and shopping with mommy Melissa. Her best times were spent with her sister Keily and brother Caleb. Skylar and Keily loved sneaking into each others rooms at night to sleep together. They had just done it a few days prior. Skylar was elated at the birth of her baby brother Caleb. She loved being a little mommy to him. She also loved her puppy Baby Girl. We will all miss her deeply. She is preceded in death by her mom, Jeania Wilson and her aunt Pat. Surviving are her father Michael Wilson; mommy Melissa Wilson; sister (Sissy) Keily Wilson, age 11 years; and baby brother, Caleb, age 6 months. Police were called to the house on Brughs Mill Road between Troutville and Fincastle about 2:30 p.m. after the residents returned home to find a man in a locked bedroom. The man, who police identified as Kevin Leigh Ponting of Maddock Avenue Northeast, appeared calm when Detective J.R. Mandeville found him sitting at a kitchen table in the house. But Ponting abruptly shot himself through the chin minutes later when Mandeville asked to pat him down, Botetourt County Sheriff Reed Kelly said. Ponting was not a burglar, police later learned. Instead, he was the boyfriend of a teen-age girl who lives in the house with her father and grandmother. The girl told police she let Ponting into the house through a bedroom window about 4 a.m. Tuesday, Kelly said. The girl's relatives did not know Ponting, or that he was involved with the girl, Kelly said. Events leading up to the shooting began around 2 p.m. when the girl's older sister and grandmother came home, heard a noise in a bedroom and called police. About that time, a brother, James Foutz, arrived for a visit. Foutz confronted Ponting when he came out of the bedroom and began talking to him at a kitchen table while the sister made a second call to police advising them that Ponting did not appear to be armed. She also told police there were guns in the house but she did not know where they were located, Kelly said. Arriving at the house, Mandeville found Ponting sitting at the kitchen table with Foutz. The detective asked Ponting to stand so he could search him. As Ponting got up, he suddenly raised a .38-caliber Derringer pistol that had been concealed in his hand and shot himself once in the chin, Kelly said. "As soon as he hit the floor, they attended to him, but there was no pulse," Kelly said. Ponting died before paramedics arrived. The gun Ponting used apparently belonged to the teen-age girl's father. She told police she took the gun from her father's room one or two days before the shooting. Kelly said he did not know what the couple had in mind when they took the gun. Officers found one spent cartridge in the Derringer and three unfired cartridges in Ponting's wallet, Kelly said. Kelly said Ponting had not been in trouble in Botetourt County. The sheriff said he believed Ponting was facing jail time in other Roanoke-area jurisdictions, but he declined to elaborate.
