From a one room schoolhouse to the introduction of computers, she thrived on teaching others the knowledge she withheld even after retiring. Through her love and devotion to teaching children, she inspired and touched many hearts in our community. It gave her great pleasure to see her former students excel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton E.Vest; her daughter, Shelba J. Willett; and her son, Terry S. Vest. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mamie Link; her sister, Maleta Walters; her brother, Henry Clay Link; and many close relatives. She is survived by her sisters, Pauline Reed, Etta Mae Hall, Patricia and brother-in-law, Freddie Nichols; and her sister-in-law, Shelby Link. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Denise Vest Harrison and Teresa Vest Cummins; and five great-grandchildren, Sierra Harrison, Makayla Harrison, Josh Vest, Caitlyn Cummins, and Nicholas Cummins. Our family would like to thank her caregivers who became family to us all, Sherry Yopp, Amanda Walters, Jennifer Caldwell, and Teresa Cummins. Also thanks to Southern Care Hospice. Interment will follow at the Wilson Cemetery. on November 6, 2014.10

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, at Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church, the Rev. Lester Kennedy officiating, with interment at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The body will arrive at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral arrangements are by Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. on January 23, 1996.1

Rheba Light Link was born October 20, 1914 in Floyd County, Va. to Henry Jacob Light and Tempie Elizabeth Vest Light. She is the last surviving member of her family of nine siblings: Lacie (Archie) Vest, Harlie (Arlin), Hubert, Hulen, Roy (Norma), Carson (Hazel), Doy (Arlie), Clara and Louise. Many beloved nieces and nephews on the Link and Light side have been an important part of her life. On December 18, 1932, Rheba married Joseph Conner Link. They were married 31 years until Joe was taken from her and the family by a heart attack on November 18, 1963. To this union there were eight beloved children: Joan (Harless) Akers, Betty ( Ike) Reynolds, Mary (Cleve) Richardson, James (Peggy) Link, Danny Link, Brenda (Carl) Hungate, Paul Link, Allen (Pat) Link, and foster daughter, Joyce (Chris) Whittaker. Also left to cherish her memory are beloved family friends, Nancy Altice and Linda Pollard. Also preceding her in death were daughters-in-law, Darlene Link, Brenda Jenks and Karen Shepherd and sons-in-law, Ike Reynolds and Cleve Richardson. Rheba was called Granma by 29 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 22, 2010 at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at the Iddings Cemetery at Terry's Fork. Friends may call at Gardner Funeral Home on Sunday after 12 p.m. where the family will be from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be no night visitation. on November 21, 2010.8

Joan Link died on April 4, 2016 at Virginia at age 82.5 She On Monday, April 4, 2016 Joan Link Akers, 82, of Riner went home to Heaven and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, where she also joined her husband of 59 years, Harless Freeman Akers. She was born on Mattox Mountain in Check, Va. on August 17, 1933 to the late Joseph Conner Link and Rheba Jane (Light) Link. Joan worked at number of jobs during her life, Blue Ridge Overall Factory, Christiansburg Garment Company, Auburn School Cafeteria, Avon Lady, but her greatest life work was being a faithful, loving wife and Godly Christian mother who raised up five children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Joan is survived by five children, Vicki Painter (Buck), Donna Lucas (Danny), Jerry Akers (Lori), Cindy Hart (Tim), and Mark Akers (Alisa Knapp, fiancé). Grandma Akers was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Tonya Phillips, Melanie Bishop, Monica Percival, Justin and Katie Lucas, Zachary, Seth, Caleb, and Hannah Akers, Matthew and Colby Memitt; as well as 14 great grandchildren, Allison Bishop, Riley Phillips, Therron, Elijah, and Ivy Percival, Amelia and Cooper Lucas, Harleigh Mikels, Micah and Raegan Akers, Paisley Cox, Ava Holt, Aubrey Akers, and Sheila Memitt. Also surviving are four brothers, James (Peggy), Danny, Paul, and Allen Link; three sisters, Betty Reynolds, Mary Richardson, Brenda Hungate (Carl); and one foster sister, Joyce Whitaker (Chris). Friends may call at Gardner Funeral Home after 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2016 where the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016 with Pastor Jerry F. Akers (son), and Pastor Ben Whitaker officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. on April 7, 2016.5

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Nancy Peters of Copper Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Lenard Harris of Salem, Shelby and Donald Fortner of Danville, Ky; grandchildren, Larry Wayne Peters, Carole Ann Craighead, Katherine Faith Hacker, Peggy Lynn Todaro, Michael L. Harris; great-grandchildren, Rebecca Peters, Bradley Peters, Quinn Todaro, Audrey Grace Hacker; sister, Mrs. Earl (Flora) Nolen of Floyd. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Donald Fortner officiating. Burial will follow in the Radford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Maberry Funeral Home. on April 7, 2000.4

Born January 16, 1923, in Whitset, N.C., he was a son of the late Gurney Leslie Whiteley and Lece Pritchett Whiteley. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Sowers Whiteley; two sons, David Whiteley, of Easthampton, Mass., and Jonathan Whiteley, of Linz, Austria; one daughter, Patricia Whiteley, of Brownsburg, Va; a stepson, Todd Cook, of Chesapeake, Va; a stepdaughter, Betsy Cook, of Vergennes, Vt; grandchildren, Jonathan and Stephanie Whiteley, Nicholas and Nolan Cook; and great-grandson, Tyler Whiteley. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Rockbridge Baths with Dr. William Klein officiating. Interment will be in Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery. on August 19, 2008.1
