Fairfax County police spokesman Warren Carmichael said Trooper Alexander M. Cochran III, 27, who was in civilian clothes, and Sgt. Dennis R. Kief, 27, were killed about 9:30 p.m. Thursday by blasts from a 12-gauge shotgun. Gregory B. Jividen, brother-in-law of the man charged in the shootings, also was hit by the gunfire. He was taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he was in stable condition with a wound to the back. Larry Lynn Gill, 32, a construction worker, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of malicious wounding and three counts of using a firearm in a felony, Carmichael said. Gill was held without bond. The shooting apparently was triggered by an argument involving Gill, his wife, Pamela, and Jividen, who lived with the Gills, Carmichael said. He said he did not know what the argument was about. Pamela Gill and Jividen left the town house where the three lived and walked into the parking lot. Shots were fired from a second-floor window of the town house, striking Jividen in the back, Carmichael said. Pamela Gill was not injured. Cochran, a resident of the apartment complex who was standing in front of his marked police cruiser, was hit by the next shot, Carmichael said. Kief, who also lived in the same apartments, was shot after he apparently ran to the parking lot to see what was happening, Carmichael said. on January 16, 1987.⁴ He died on July 16, 1995 at Fishersville, Augusta Co., Virginia, at age 40; Hung himself in prison.³

Born July 31, 1983, at Beckley, he was the son of Michael D. and Ceresa Meadows Petitt of Victor. He was a 2001 graduate of Midland Trail High School and a clerk at Summersville Hospital. He was a member of the Mabscott Baptist Christian Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. His paternal grandfather, Denver Petitt, preceded him in death. Additional survivors include one brother, Richard Petitt and wife, Ashkey, and their daughter, Ashton of Victor, W.Va; maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Jeanette Meadows of Grandview, W.Va; paternal grandmother, Helen Petitt of Victor; and one uncle, Ben Meadows and wife, Annie, and their children Brooke and Brian of Beckley. Graveside service will be at the Mills Family Cemetery in Egeria, W.Va. on March 31, 2006.⁴
