John Raymond Arnold1,2

M, b. May 30, 1939, d. May 3, 2015
John Raymond Arnold John R. “Pete” Arnold, 75, of Lancaster, died Sunday, May 3, following a long illness. A Lancaster resident since 1970, Pete was the eldest of four children of the late George T. and Cris Nunn Arnold. He moved from his home state of West Virginia to join the history faculty at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster and was named the school’s “Outstanding Professor” in 1971-72. During his 24-year tenure, he rose from assistant professor to Dean, the top administrative position. He served as Dean from 1982 to 1994, when he retired at the age of 55. He subsequently was named both Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and Dean Emeritus of the USCL campus. A month after Pete’s retirement, Gov. Carroll Campbell awarded him The Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor for lifetime achievements and contributions to South Carolina. The General Assembly that same month passed a resolution of appreciation “for his outstanding service to higher education.” Born in Ingram Branch, WV, on May 30, 1939, he grew up in Beckley, WV, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1957. He earned a B.S. degree in education from Concord College in Athens, WV, in 1961, and a Master of Arts degree in American and European history from Marshall University in 1964. He also completed post graduate work in educational administration from Marshall University. From 1961 until the summer of 1970, he taught history, civics and speech at the junior high and high school levels, served as the assistant principal of Man (WV) High School, and as the Director of the Logan (WV) campus of Marshall University. He was actively involved in the Lancaster community in organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Boy Scouts of America, the Council of the Arts, the Society of Historical Preservation, the United Way, the Elliott White Springs Memorial Hospital, the Mental Health Association, and the American Heart Association. He also was a 40-year member and officer of the Rotary Club and a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church. Pete was a popular speaker and master of ceremonies for a variety of audiences, and perhaps more than anything else, he was known by his friends for his wit, his ever-present sense of humor, and for his love of music -- especially folk, country, and Bluegrass. He helped organize, sponsor and bring many individual performers and groups to Lancaster, and for a few years participated in a quartet that included Julie Roberts, when she was a USCL student. Survivors from the closely knit family he loved dearly include a brother, Dr. George T. Arnold, of Lancaster; a sister, Patty Arnold Noll, and her husband, Alan, of Lancaster; a sister, Marilyn Arnold Meyers, and her husband, Rich, of Tampa, FL; and his former wife, Jackie Lee Arnold, of Lancaster. Additional survivors include nieces Renee S. Noll, Alexandria Carter and her husband, Rick, Britney Smith, Taylor Smith, and Audrey Noll; nephews Craig Arnold Noll and his wife, Jenn, Zack Amick, and Ashton McGuire; three aunts, one uncle, and numerous cousins. Entombment will be in Mausoleum B at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, WV.2 He was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2,3 He and Jackie Lee Strickler were divorced.2 John Raymond Arnold was born on May 30, 1939 at Ingram Branch, Fayette Co., West Virginia.2 He married Jackie Lee Strickler, daughter of Jackson Carter "Jack" Strickler and Nancy Margaret Fuller, on May 19, 1962 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia.1 John Raymond Arnold died on May 3, 2015 at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., South Carolina, at age 75.2
