For the last 47 years of his life, he made his home in St. Albans and retired from Union Carbide Corp. as a master laboratory technician after 40 years of service. He was a character in life and was a true friend to everyone he knew regardless of age or stature. He spent many hours cutting hair and telling jokes to friends throughout the county. He was a man who led by example in the way he treated others in his life, and in his death, as he was an organ donor. One of his fondest memories was the 19 years he spent teaching Sunday school at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in St. Albans. He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Betty Sparr Paxton. He is also survived by his brother, Kenny of Christiansburg, Va; son, Gary Michael; son, Tim and his wife, Tracey; and daughter, Kathy Lester and her husband, David, all of St. Albans; grandchildren, Christina Paxton Holder, Rebecca Paxton Seeley, and Samantha Paxton, all of Georgia, Shelby Paxton and Katie, Shannon, and Cassidy Lester, of St. Albans; six great-grandchildren. He is also mourned by many loving nieces, nephews and his special friend and brother-in-law, Paul Sparr and his wife, Jewel. on June 2, 2006.2

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Bertie Paxton; son, Jon Paxton; and brother, Woodrow Paxton. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Paxton; sons, Kenneth ‘Kip’ Paxton and wife, Katie, Jeff Paxton, and Chris Wilkinson and wife, Kellie; grandchildren, Benje Paxton and Braxton Gill; as well as three great-grandchildren. Calvin was the oldest male member of Mallory Church of God, which he attended for over 40 years. He loved to sing and play gospel music on his guitar and harmonica. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Thelma Canterbury Paynter of Charleston; seven children and their spouses, Lois Brown of Greenville, Tenn., Kathleen and the Rev. James Walker of Oceana, Joyce and the Rev. Phillip L. Cook of Monticello, Fla., Carole Cook of Cyclone, Robert and Judy Paynter of Oceana, Charles and Wendy Paynter of Cyclone and Joseph and Dorothy Paynter of Pineville; one stepdaughter, with whom he made his home, Billie Jones and husband, Jerry, of Charleston; four sisters, Donzel Blankenship of Turkey Creek, Mary Ruth Elkins of Mallory and Bonnie Eldridge and Nancy Miller, both of Cyclone; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren. Burial will follow in Cook Cemetery, Cyclone. on February 21, 2006.2
