He was also predeceased by two brothers, Morris Eugene Gowen and Robert Ellis Gowen and his wife Rose Anderson Gowen. He is survived by his children, Patricia Ann Gowen of Norfolk, George E. ''Rusty'' Gowen Jr. of Machipongo, Va., and Patrick Kelley Gowen of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Clinton M. Gowen of Newport News and Addie Lynn Gowen of Madison Heights, Va; and two grandchildren, Kristine Rose Gowen and William Hunter Gowen, both of Virginia Beach. A World War II veteran, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He led a vigorous life. He loved to travel and had visited many parts of the world. After the war, he studied engineering and was an employee of Morehead Engineering, served as chief surveyor for construction of Bogata International Airport, Bogata, Columbia. He attended both North Carolina State University and the University of Richmond. A 1950 graduate of the School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, he worked for several years as a bank examiner for the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He joined the staff of what was then the Seaboard Citizens National Bank (now Sun Trust) and retired after 30 years of service. He taught at the Consumer Banking School at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. In post retirement, he worked for Heritage Bank and Trust. He made many lasting contributions to the Norfolk community, serving on numerous board of directors. He was a member of the American Legion, Ward's Corner Lions Club, Phi Delta Theta, and the Lawn Society of the University of Virginia. He was a Roman Catholic. on December 27, 2002.6
