Freddie Victoria Brightwell1,2
F, b. December 30, 1919, d. February 10, 2014
Freddie Victoria Brightwell was buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park, 5196 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia.3,2 She Freddie Brightwell Viar, 94, of Madison Heights, Virginia, left her earthly body on Monday, February 10, 2014, at Lynchburg General Hospital surrounded by her family, along with many friends and family praying for her. God called this beautiful soul home at 10:09 p.m. Freddie was born in Campbell County, Virginia, at Six Mile Bridge, to Leonard James Brightwell and Mary Elizabeth Hackett Brightwell on December 30, 1919. She was raised in Madison Heights, and made her home in Madison Heights, all of her life. Freddie was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Harris Viar, whom she will celebrate their 75th wedding Anniversary on February 18, 2014, in heaven; two sisters, Marion Brightwell Sligh Ore and Ruby Brightwell Coleman who she adored with every fiber of her being; two brothers-in-law, Alexander Ore and Russell Coleman; a son-in-law, Ronald E. Stowe Sr; and a great-grandson, Samuel Thomas Falls. Freddie was also preceded in death by several dear aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than life itself. She always said that her life was fulfilled by her children, her grandchildren, her great- grandchildren and her friends in the 40 years following the death of her love, her husband, Homer Viar. Freddie is survived by her daughters, Barbara Viar Falls of Amherst, and Linda Viar Stowe of Madison Heights; a dear sister, Mary Brightwell Christian and her husband, Marvin E. Christian. Freddie is also survived by a very special neighbor and nephew, James L. "Jimmy" Sligh and wife, Sara; as well as her friend of many years and neighbor, Ralph Stinson. Freddie doted on seven grandchildren and later in life loved their mates as if they were her own grandchildren too, Victoria "Vicki" Stowe-Ranson Craig (Randy), Ronald E."Ron" Stowe Jr., Edwin L. "Winnie" Falls Jr., Sherry Lynn Falls (Bobby Unrue), Charles Radford Falls (Leighann), Sarah Stowe-Thacker (Scott) and William Joseph "Joey" Stowe (fiancee, Debra Reid). Freddie was showered with extra blessings of being able to love and know her great- grandchildren, Garrett Stowe Ranson, Zachary Charles Carter, Russell Thomas Falls, and Charleigh Denise Falls, and finally this past summer her last great-grandchild, Chase Radford Falls. Freddie is also survived by a special friend and caregiver, Fannie Humphrys. Freddie had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and she loved them with all her heart and did her best to keep in touch with each other them, even with miles between her family members. Freddie lived by simple means, worked hard but shared her gigantic heart always in a way with every person she ever came across in life. She would move the world for you and not have to say a word. Her legacy will be her huge heart, her warmth, kindness and genuine love of people. Freddie enjoyed in her younger years participating in Virginia Girl State and being a counselor and a member of the Board of Directors, American Legion Auxiliary and many garden clubs. She was a bird enthusiast, gardener, reader, loved all sorts of music, cross-stitching and floral design. She loved the ocean and taking a trip to anywhere. You could always say "Freddie was always ready." She and her husband visited every state in the United States together except for Wyoming and Alaska. She made it to Hawaii many years after his death with her best friends, Janet Coiner and Marion Irvin. She worked from the age of 13, later retiring from Craddock Terry Shoe Corporation as the Cafeteria Manager only to get bored in a year and return to work full time to manage Monelison Jr. High School cafeteria from the day it opened until she retired again this time from Amherst County Public Schools, as she approached her 80's. She owned and operated Freddie's Flower Shop for many years alongside her daughter, Barbara, in addition to working her normal daily job.
