Clarence Cecil Elmore Sr. was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1 His Social Security Number was 233-52-5072.4 He In the 1910 Census Clarence Elmore was enumerated as a nine year grandson in the home of his grandfather William Ballard Elmore. Even though his parents are always cited (even by any form Clarence submitted) as Sarah Mariah Taylor and William Ballard Elmore, I believe this is incorrect. His birthdate is Sep 10, 1910. Dale Edward Elmore, who is a proven son of William and Sarah, has a birth date of Apr 10, 1910 so it would be impossible to Clarence to also be their son. I believe the that William and Sarah Elmore's daughter, Florence M. Elmore, who died unmarried in May 1919, is actually the mother of Clarence.5 He and Mary Louise White were divorced.3 Clarence Cecil Elmore Sr. was born on September 17, 1910 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,2,3,6,4 He married Mary Louise White on March 3, 1931 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.7,8 Clarence Cecil Elmore Sr. married Nora Harris on January 24, 1973 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia.3,9 Clarence Cecil Elmore Sr. died on March 18, 1980 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 69.1,4 He Clarence Cecil Elmore Sr., 69, of the Athens Road, Princeton, who served as state liquor commissioner under two governors, died Tuesday morning in his sleep. An influential state Democratic political figure for many years, Elmore served as Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner under Govs. W. W. Barron and Hulett C. Smith. Elmore was on a golfing trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C., when he died. He had been living in retirement for a number of years, according to a spokesman for Elmore's family. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Princeton. At the age of 21 he began his poltical career as an elected constable in the East River District of Mercer County, a position he held from 1932 to 1936. He was a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy under Sheriff Crumpecker, 1937-41, was a justice of the peace in 1941; and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He re-entered public office and was elected Mercer County Sheriff, serving from 1949-53. He served on the Mercer County Court, 1954-60; served as a prominent Democratic leader in local, state, and national political arenas; was a member of the Mercer County Democratic Club, served on local and state Democratic Executive Committees, and was a member of the BPOE Lodge No. 1459 and the Moose Lodge No. 1521 of Princeton. He had lived in Princeton all his life, and was born in Princeton on Sept. 17, 1910, son of the late William Ballard and Sarah Taylor Elmore. In 1968, Elmore was convicted of evading payment of $3,300 in federal income taxes and spent 13 months in a federal prison at Allenwood, Pa. Although he denied any part in the scandals of the Barron administration — which sent several other state officials to prison — Elmore said after he was released from prison that federal agents had offered him a lighter sentence if he would talk about Barron’s administration. But Elmore said he didn't because he knew nothing about the scandals. Surviving are his wife, Nora Dodd Elmore of Princeton; a son, Clarence C. "Sonny" Elmore Jr., Princeton; two daughters, Mrs. Christine West of Princeton and Mrs. Connie Sue Bennett of Cambridge, Md., two stepchildren, Mrs. W.      Alma Christine Elmore Christine Elmore West left her adoring earthly family to join her Heavenly Father on Friday March 5, 2021 after a short illness. Born July 5, 1932 in Princeton, West Virginia to Clarence C. Elmore Sr. and Mary Louise Elmore, Chris spent all but three years of her life in Princeton. A graduate of Princeton High School (Chris became an x-ray technician for two years after high school) but later graduated from Concord College with a degree in Business Education. While at Concord she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority Alpha Alpha Chapter and Homecoming Queen. Introduced by her aunt to a retired NFL football player from the Pittsburgh area who was building the Turnpike Motel in Princeton and boarding with her aunt, Chris married Patrick Michael West Sr. in 1956 (in Wauseon, Ohio) where Pat was building another new motel and restaurant. They purchased a farm in Wauseon, ran the motel and had their first son, Patrick Michael West Jr. in 1957. Soon they sold this motel and built another in Elkhart, Indiana which they ran for a year before selling. During this time they had their second child, Christy Lynn West (now Lynn Bayle), and moved back to Princeton where Chris would remain the rest of her life. The couple had two more sons in Princeton, Thomas Gregory West and Samuel Peter West. The West family home at 102 Haven Drive was built in 1960 and remained Chris’ home for the rest of her life where she and Pat raised their four children. Chris became a very active citizen of Princeton and southern West Virginia. Over the decades she served in a plethora of roles on community, county and state wide boards and charitable organizations. A member of Princeton’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church her entire life after marrying Pat they actively brought their children up in the church. She served on the Altar Society and new church fund raising committee, as well as organized bake sales and huge annual bazaars at Glenwood Park. The Catholic Church was an everyday part of the West family. Her unwavering faith remained a staple element to who she was and how she is remembered by her family. She instilled these core beliefs in each of her children and subsequently in her grandchildren. God Bless her for that! Always involved in politics, with her father and brother, the threesome were a formidable family in helping shape the direction of elected officials and representatives of the citizens of Princeton, Mercer County, and West Virginia. She served on the Mercer County Democratic Women’s Club as President for a number of years and was a lifelong member (receiving numerous platinum club awards). Very proud of her governor issued license plate #124, she drove her black Cadillac around the state displaying it like a badge of honor. She was quite the proud and strong woman, but so well liked and respected. Her heritage as a West Virginian (with family dating back to the early 1800s in Mercer County) remained another hallmark of her personality. For 31 years and 8 months she worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways, retiring in December 2015 at the age of 83. During this time she served for years on the King Coal Highway authority board. Her service was memorialized in naming the expansive I 73-74-75 highway bridge near Bluefield the Christine West Memorial Bridge. Civic involvement and awards included: President of the Periwinkle Garden Club 1969-71, Downtown Princeton Beautification Committee 2010-2018, Mercer County/Princeton district grass root committee, administrative assistant of the West Virginia Beautification DOH committee, teacher and substitute teacher for Mercer County Schools, member of the West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women since 1974, nominated as West Virginia Democrat of the year representing Mercer County in 2008, Distinguished Outstanding Personality of the South, President Elks Country Club Women’s Organization, an adult model for local charitable fund raising events (her sense of style and grace were always present making an impression on all she met and particularly her granddaughters). Chris leaves her four children, eight grandchildren (Megan West Thompson, Kristin West Spivey, Addison West Oswalt, Aaron Prince, Jordan West, Nathan West, Garrett West, and Clare West), seven great grandchildren, two daughters-in-law (Patricia Tolley West and Jimi West), son-in-law (Mick Bayle), two nieces, and two nephews. Known for her persistently spunky and fun loving attitude, Chris was an example to us all to live our lives well. Her love and joy for her family was boundless. She shaped and influenced us through incredible love that was never questioned, always deep, always sincere, always there. She will be interred with her loving father, mother, brother, and sister at the Garden of Trinity, Roselawn Cemetery in Princeton.5 She was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.5,4 She was born on July 5, 1932 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.4,5 As of 1956,her married name was West.5 She married Patrick Michael West Sr. in 1956 at Wauseon, Fulton Co., Ohio.5 Alma Christine Elmore and Patrick Michael West Sr. were divorced on October 18, 1975.3,8 As of June 19, 1980,her married name was Toney.3 Alma Christine Elmore married Rev.      Rev. Fred Talmadge Toney Rev. Fred Talmadge Toney, 90, of Roanoke, Virginia, son of Albert and Vercil Toney, departed this earthly home for the “big house” on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. Toney, as he liked to be called, was born May 17, 1932 at the farm of his grandparents, and the infant, not expected to live, grew into a strong young man who became center guard of his Athens High School basketball team, which in 1950, won the WV State Championship. He attended Concord College on a basketball scholarship, but after a short time there he felt his calling in life was to enter the ministry, so in 1952 he entered Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, TN, and from there he began his lifelong dream of being a minister. He pastored churches in West Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, Virginia and Oklahoma. He also preached in revivals anywhere he was called, as his passion was to reach as many in need as he could. Rev. Toney loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were his favorite pastimes. He also loved his dogs and his beloved Arabian horses. His most cherished though were his many loyal friends over the years. He is survived by his three daughters Connie Toney of Lerona, Dana Harlor and her husband Bill of Moneta, VA and Patty Toney of Hope Mills, NC; and son Tim Toney and his wife Trish of El Dorado, KS. Also surviving are his six grandchildren Celestial Trigg, Ericka Hallis, Brian Harlor, Erin Spradling, Amber McClaren, and TR Toney as well as his fourteen great grandchildren and his three great, great grandchildren.
