Mary Frances Ross Mary Frances Ross Goudie of Bassett died peacefully on May 20, 2020, at 99 years and 7 months. At the time of her death, she was living at Autumn Care of Mechanicsville where she received excellent care and concern by the nursing staff as well as other staff members. She was the daughter of the late Katherine Lenoah Smith Ross and Charles Louis Ross, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Victor Goudie, Sr. and a brother, Charles Louis Ross, Jr. Mary was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, and grew up in Ferrum, Virginia. She was a graduate of Ferrum College and Lewis Gale School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse who worked at Martinsville General Hospital, Bassett-Walker Knitting, and Harmony Hall. She was the office nurse for Dr. Stanley and Dr. Thomas. She was a member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Katherine Wagner (Paul) of Mechanicsville, Charles Victor Goudie, Jr. (Sandy) of Roanoke, and former son-in-law, Daniel Small of Richmond. Also surviving are grandchildren, John Small, Karl Small (Katie), Ross Small, Jason McNeil and Aaron McNeil; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Cameron Small, Maxx, Roselynn, Spencer and Mischa McNeil; sister-in-law, Barbara Ross, of Lynchburg; her brother’s children, LouAnne Ross Purnell of Georgia, Bob Ross of Lynchburg and Elizabeth Ann Perdue of Rocky Mount; along with many relatives of her husband in Illinois and Georgia. Prior to leaving Bassett, her devoted and caring caregiver was Babs Jarrett Priddy. The family will always be grateful for her assistance in keeping Mama in her home until she was almost 99. Also, her special niece, Elizabeth Anne Purdue, R.N., (Marvin) of Rocky Mount provided much assistance over the years with her health care. Charles Louis Ross Jr. was buried at Saint James Cemetery, Ferrum, Franklin Co., Virginia.3,2 He Charles Louis Ross, Jr., 89, of Rocky Mount, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 12, 2014 at the James River Nursing and Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va., following an extended illness. He was born in Ferrum, Va. to the late Charles Louis, Sr and Katherine L. Smith on February 17, 1925. Charles graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1943, was drafted into the army and proudly served his country as an X-Ray technician with the 80th Field Hospital Unit in the European Campaign during WWII from 1943-1946. He attended Virginia Tech and University of Virginia. He married Barbara Anne Richards of the Pleasant Hill community. A dedicated and loving father and husband, Charles also made many friends throughout the community as a sewing machine sales and service technician and a tinker, trader, big band, zydeco and traditional mountain music fan, especially old time fiddling. One of his greatest joys came through the fellowship with his church, Central Grace Church of Rocky Mount and his beloved family there. Charles is survived by his wife, Barbara Richards Ross; sister, Mary Frances Goudie of Bassett, Va; two children: Robert R. Ross, of Hampton, Va. and Lou Anne Ross-Purnell, of Flowery Branch, Ga; two grandchildren: Betsy R. (David) Payne, of Santa Rita, Guam and Zachery A. Purnell of Atlanta, Ga; sister-in-law, Catherine (William) Kingery and brother-in-law, John W. Richards of Rocky Mount; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Victor Goudie Sr. and Mary Frances Ross Goudie; his sister-in-law, Linda Unrue; brother-in-law, Jerry Boggs; and brother-in-law, Don Unrue. He and Sandy enjoyed listening to beach music, dancing, and playing tennis. His career included working for Halmode Garment Industry and later in inventory control. Graveside service at approximately 2 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church in Ferrum, Virginia.4 He was buried at Saint James Cemetery, Ferrum, Franklin Co., Virginia.4 He was born on October 4, 1946 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,3 He married Sandy Kay Boggs on July 2, 1988 at Roanoke, Virginia.2 Charles Victor Goudie Jr. died on December 25, 2022 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 76.4

Barbara Anne Richards Barbara Anne Richards Ross, 88, of Rocky Mount, Va., went swiftly and peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on December 14, 2021 at the Forest Health and Rehab Center in Lynchburg, Va., following an extended illness. She was born in the Pleasant Hill Community of Franklin County, Virginia and the youngest of six children to the late Carroll Tucker Richards, Sr., and Annie B. Wells Richards on July 22, 1933. During the Great Depression she helped with the numerous needs of her family homestead and gave care to her mother who began suffering from strokes in her 50s and when Barbara was a young girl, as did her siblings Eugene B. Richards, Carroll Tucker Richards, Jr., Hazel Wells (Garrett), John William Richards, and Mary Catherine (Beckner Kingery). Barbara married Charles Louis Ross, Jr. of Ferrum, Va. at age 18 and had two children, Robert (Bob) and Lou Anne. A brilliant mind, a voracious reader, an avid enthusiast of the outdoors, and a gourmet cook, her greatest joys came through her relationships with her family, friends, and the beloved fellowship with her church, Central Grace Church of Rocky Mount. Barbara served her community for over forty years at the Leggett/Belk stores in Rocky Mount and Martinsville. Barbara is predeceased by her husband, Charles, great grandson, Josell Ross Payne, her brothers and sisters, and is survived by two children; Robert R. Ross, of Lynchburg, VA, and Lou Anne Ross-Purnell, of Flowery Branch, GA, two grandchildren, "Alexandra" (Betsy) R. Payne of Flowery Branch, GA and Zachery A. Purnell of Denver, CO, nieces and nephews, Rebecca (John) McDonald of Greensboro, NC, Tuck (Debby) Richards of Roanoke, VA, Lucinda Richards of Rocky Mount, VA, Jimmy (Janice) Beckner of Rocky Mount, VA, Charlene (Richard) Lynch of Roanoke, VA, Tommy Beckner of Virginia Beach, VA, Katherine (Paul) Wagner of Richmond, VA, Victor (Sandie) Goudie of Roanoke, VA, Elmer E. Purnell, Jr. father of Alexandra and Zachery of Gainesville, GA, many great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
