Va. - William Cassius Cook of Charleston, native of Wyoming county and former resident of Princeton, who played a prominent role in West Virginia’s educational system and was a figure in Republican politics, died Wednesday night at his hotel room in Hinton. Cook, who was 65, had been in Hinton for several months engaged with a government staff in the acquisition of land which will be inundated by waters of the Bluestone dam, now nearing completion on the New river, near Hinton. He was stricken suddenly after retiring at his hotel room. A physician was summoned but Cook died within a short time. The body is to be returned to Charleston yesterday. Cook was born in Windom, Wyoming county, on November 1, 1882, the son of William Henry Harrison Cook and Mary Jane Cooper Cook. He was graduated from Concord College where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He then took additional work at West Virginia university. He taught school for 10 years, then served 16 years as superintendent of McDowell county schools. He was also a former district school superintendent in McDowell. He resided in Princeton for a number of years. Cook was state superintendent of schools from 1929 to 1933 and served as a minority member of the board of control in the Democratic administration of former governor M. M. Neely. His career also included membership on the state board of education from 1919 to 1929 and president of the state education association in 1925. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Lula Stewart, and two children, Miss Eunice Stewart Cook, member of the faculty of Marshall college, and Dr. William C. Cook. Jr., a physician at Richmond, Va. Interment will be in a Charleston cemetery. on January 2, 1948.6
