Mary Lou lived in Charleston for the past 23 years but spent most of her life in Spencer where she and her husband Clyde owned and operated several businesses. Their businesses included the White Oak Restaurant of Spencer, the Big S Market, and White's Construction, the Kopper Kettle and Bond's Pharmacy of Clendenin and several others. While operating the White Oak, she and Clyde held an annual Christmas Dinner providing free dinner for all that came to the restaurant and for the homebound. Mary Lou, a committed Christian, often hosted Gospel concerts at the restaurant, as well. She was quick to smile with a pleasant welcoming disposition. She was kind and caring, always putting friends and family first. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mary Lou adopted and raised orphan fawns, owls, and other homeless animals. An accomplished painter, she also enjoyed sewing and embroidery. She was a fan of WVU football and basketball and was very active in Roane County politics. Mary Lou is survived by son Stephen C. White (wife Annette); daughter, Nancy Stanton (husband H. James Stanton, MD); grandchildren, James Stanton II (wife Fini), Trevor Stanton (Amiee), Annalisa Stanton Feinman (husband Evan); great - granddaughter, Penelope Stanton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 25, at the Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, at the funeral home, with Pastor Lee Swor officiating. Burial will be in the Sand Run Cemetery Elkview, WV. on January 24, 2019.¹

Jan retired from Rose City Press in 1985 to spend time with her grandchildren, who she loved dearly. In recent years, Jan was a volunteer at Drs. Whittington and Whittington.      Esta Colleen White Esta Fletcher, 75, of Elkview, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 4, 2021 after a short illness. Esta was born August 16, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Edith White. She was a Christian and a faithful member of Sand Run Gospel Tabernacle. She owned and operated Cassell’s Grocery in Young’s Bottom in the 1970’s. She later worked at Bigley Foodland and after several years of service, she retired from there. Esta made many friends while working at Foodland, and as fate would have it, she met her beloved husband John Fletcher. Preceded in death by her father Robert E. White and mother Edith White; siblings, Ray C. White, Ernest Clyde White, Willowdean “Willa Dean” White, Janet L. Rucker, Claude William White and Jack Wayne White. Left to cherish her memory are her husband John N. Fletcher, sister Alice Young of Hampton, Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. A small graveside service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, January 7th, 2021 with Pastor Marvin Welch officiating. She will be laid to rest at Sand Run Cemetery Elkview, WV.
