     Loren Virgil "Bill" Abernathy Loren "Bill" Abernathy, 72, of Farmington, Mo., died Dec. 22 at the John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis. He was born on April 19, 1924, in Arcadia, son of the late William and Alma Knight Abernathy. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, June Gregory Abernathy, one infant daughter, one brother, Earl Abernathy. Before his retirement he operated a farm and was also employed as a machine operator with the Trimfoot Shoe Company. Mr. Abernathy was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Doe Run First Baptist church. During World War II, he served his country with the 82nd Airborne Division, participating in military action in North Africa, the Normandy invasion, Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received four Bronze Stars, a Certificate of Merit, and the Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge at Doe Run and the VFW Post No. 5896 at Farmington. He is survived by his second wife, Ollie Kreis Abernathy; one son, Garland Wayne "Toby" Abernathy and wife, Donna of Farmington; two granddaughters, Cheryl Abernathy of Farmington, and Stephanie (Mrs. Larry) Gilmore; one great-granddaughter, Brandi Gilmore, all of Gridley, Ill; one brother, Jack Abernathy of Farmington; a very special nice, Judy Halter of Bonne Terre. Also surviving are two step-sons, Gary Cunningham and wife Gaye of Jefferson City and Darrell Cunningham and wife Kathy of Bourbon; one step-daughter, Carroll (Mrs. Paul) Massey of Atlanta, GA; ten step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Cozean Funeral Home. A VFW service will be conducted at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Cozean Memorial Chapel with Rev. V. E. Defreece officiating.
