Herbert Neil Nerge was buried at DeLand Memorial Gardens, DeLand, Volusia Co., Florida.2 He Another of “The Greatest Generation” has passed away. Early Friday morning December 26, Herb Nerge died in his sleep at the Florida Lutheran Retirement Center in DeLand. He lived a long and interesting life. He was born December 29, 1919 in Dundee, IL, the son of German descendants, Herman & Ella Witt Nerge. He grew up in Elgin, IL. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Air Corp in late 1940 and was trained as an aircraft mechanic. He was stationed at Paine Field, Everett, WA when WWII started December 1941. He was sent to Harding Field, Baton Rouge, LA early 1942 for wartime training. In May 1942 he was shipped to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska to fix pursuit planes. The Japanese were bombing nearby, plus living in cold tents was not fun. In 1943 he was back in Baton Rouge and met his first wife, Ida Jordan. They were married June 4, 1944 at Hillsborough AFB, Tampa, FL. Throughout the war he was a flight chief on a variety of pursuit aircraft, the P-36, P-39, P-40, P-47 and P-51. After the war ended he transferred to being an aerial engineer. From 1948 to 1957 he logged 6625 hours in the C-54 transport. During this time he flew the Berlin Airlift and evacuated Korean War wounded back to the states. In 1957 he shifted to the C-118 transport and over the next three years logged another 670 hours. After 21 years of active duty he retired from the Air Force in 1961 as an MSgt. Post military he held positions as a machinist and mechanic. In 1984 his wife of 40 years died. Three years later on Valentine’s Day 1987 the widower, Herb, married the widow, Marguerite Ball Dayton. They were married 28 years and collectively have 3 children, 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. A dedicated member of the American Legion since 1961, he served in various positions in this organization, including Commander of the DeLand Post 6. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Over the years his hobbies have included building model airplanes, collecting coins, playing games, traveling, flying private planes, and buying, restoring and selling old tools. He will be best remembered for his patriotism, humor, perfectionism, and willingness to help others. Herb and Marguerite have been active for many years at Trinity United Methodist Church and are members of the Friendship class. His wife Marguerite and children, Nancy Innes and Larry Nerge, are grateful to the Good Samaritan Society for the love and care shown over the past 2 ½ years. Herb was cremated and he will be buried in private at DeLand Memorial Gardens next to his first wife Ida.2 He was born on December 29, 1919 at Dundee, Kane Co., Illinois.2 He married Marguerite Frances Ball, daughter of Claude Cleonis Ball and Lottie Grace Light, on February 14, 1987 at Volusia Co., Florida.1,2,3 Herbert Neil Nerge died on December 26, 2015 at DeLand, Volusia Co., Florida, at age 95.2,3
