Dr. Carol Sue Golden was born on February 3, 1953 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2 As of 1985,her married name was Imes.2 She married Dr. Norman Imes in 1985.2 Dr. Carol Sue Golden died on August 22, 2003 at Oklahoma at age 50.2 She Dr. Carol Sue Imes joined God on August 22, 2003 after a lengthy illness caused by pancreatic cancer. She left the world bravely and courageously without fear just as she had lived her life. She was born Carol Sue Golden, daughter of Dollie Garnet Furrow-Golden-Basham (1933-2017) and Willie Golden (Deceased) on February 3, 1953 in Beckley, WV. Her father had served as a sergeant in the Army, so she and her five siblings lived in several cities from Texas to France and Germany as she grew up. She graduated with high honors from Mineral Wells, TX in 1971. She then attended the University of Texas at Arlington from 1971 to 1975 and graduated with honors and a BS in Biology with a Chemistry minor. Carol attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, TX. She excelled in medical school and graduated with her medical doctorate in 1979 at a time when women physicians were unusual. Postgraduate education was obtained in OK. She completed a medical internship in 1979 at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Carol then became the first woman trained in ophthalmology in Oklahoma. At the Dean McGee Eye Institute she developed her expertise as a clinician and an eye surgeon with excellent skills. Her academic reputation helped pave the way for other women to follow. It was always very important to her that women (and men) be treated fairly and allowed to use their intellect to their full capacity. Following training, she began the practice of ophthalmology in Oklahoma City in 1983 and worked until her health began to fail due to pancreatic cancer in 2003. In 1985 she married Dr. Norman Imes, a pulmonary physician; whom she loved dearly. She is survived by Norman and their two children, Suzanne Imes and Byron Imes; her mother and stepfather, Dollie Garnet Furrow-Golden-Basham (1933-2017) and Mack Lewis Basham (1930-2013) of WV; siblings, Willie Golden & Debbie Golden of TX, Terri Golden-Roberts of Oklahoma City, and Pauline Golden-Pierce and her husband Paul Pierce of Eufaula; her stepchildren, Heather Imes, Jennifer Imes-Ewing & husband Jason Ewing, and Jeremy Imes & wife Joanna Imes, all of Oklahoma City; her grandmother Effie Frances Meadows-Furrow (1911-2006) of WV; and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition to her father, Carol was preceded in death by her grandfather, Henry Harvey Furrow (1891-1968). Dr. Imes was active in many medical and civic organizations. She was the first woman elected President of the Oklahoma County Medical Society and was also elected to three terms as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Oklahoma State Medical Association. She previously served on the Board of Directors of Integris Medical Center, Habitat for Humanity Advisory Board, and the Board of Prevent Blindness Oklahoma. Additionally, she actively participated in many aspects of organized medicine having served as a Delegate to the Young Physician Section of the AMA, and was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the State Eye Society. She was a past president of the Oklahoma Medical Women's Association and served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Integris Baptist Medical Center for ten years. At the time of her death she served on the Board of Directors of Integris Health. The family wishes to thank Dr. Don Murray, his nurse Nancy King, and Dr. Brian Geister for their Medical expertise and friendship throughout her lengthy illness. They also thank Nancy Rodriguez for her compassion and care. Many friends contributed to Carol's happiness, but the family is especially appreciative of Dr. Becky Stough, Beth Pauchnik, and Shirley Burnett for their love, compassion, and companionship. Carol was dedicated to the practice of her profession, ophthalmology, but she developed a special bond with each of her patients. She loved and respected her patients and looked forward to each and every day of her medical practice... in return, Carol's patients loved and respected her. Memories of her beauty, laughter and wisdom will always be cherished by those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Carol may be made to Integris Baptist Medical Center Foundation in support of Baptist Community Clinic where Carol provided charitable care for indigent patients. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2003. Dr. George Cladis will conduct the service and a reception will be held following the memorial in the courtyard. on August 24, 2003.2
