David Lynn Wimmer was buried at Saint Marys of the Lake Cemetery, 1 Honey Locust Drive, Lakewood, Ocean Co., New Jersey.1 His Social Security Number was 229-62-8422.3 He married Catherine Guagenti.4 David Lynn Wimmer was born on December 2, 1946 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3,4 He died on February 17, 1979 at Jackson Township, Ocean Co., New Jersey, at age 32.1,4 He JACKSON TOWNSHIP - A 32-year-old-man and his two step-daughters were killed early yesterday when fire that started from a candle swept through the upper floor of their home during a power failure. The man died after he went back into the burning house in an attempt to save the children. His wife and three other children survived. David Wimmer, 30 South Lane View Drive, and Michelle Scudiero, 12, and her sister, Catherine, 10, were pronounced dead at Paul Kimball Hospital, Lakewood, police said. Three other children, Joseph Ferraro, 15; David Wimmer Jr., 8, and Daniel Wimmer, 1 12, were treated at the hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. The man's wife, Catherine, 33, was uninjured, she said. The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. in an area that had been without power since 1:15 a.m., police said. According to Detective Gary Brown, the fire began when a candle in one of the bedrooms ignited a combustible material. Heat and smoke filled the second floor of the Cape Cod-style house, and Wimmer and the two girls were found in another bedroom later, police said. According to a neighbor, Iris Broder, 13 South Lake Drive, Joseph was carrying a candle into the room of one of the girls who had woken up crying and afraid of the dark. A stray dog the family had taken in only a few days earlier jumped on the boy. she said, causing him to fall against a window and the curtain to ignite. After trying in vain to extinguish the fire himself, Joseph awakened the father who then alerted the other boys and his wife, Mrs. Broder said. Wimmer, his wife and the three boys escaped from their first-floor bedrooms, but the two girls were trapped in their room up stairs, the neighbor said. Wimmer re-entered the house for the girls, she said. Another neighbor, Phillip Huddy, and a man she knew only as Lee entered the house after they learned the father had gone back in for the girls, Mrs. Broder said. Huddy, 20 Maple Ave., said he tried to get upstairs but was pushed back by flames. His family had been awakened by the cold in his home, and, while he was in the basement working on the furnace, his wife heard screams coming from the direction of the Wimmer house, he said. Huddy said he got Joseph, who was downstairs, to leave the house before he tried to go upstairs. After the first police car arrived, Huddy said he and one of the officers tried again to reach the upper floor. Earlier, Wimmer had romoved candles from the children's room, she said. According to George Metzger, spokesman for Jersey Central Power & Light Co., aproximately 80 customers were affected when a wire came down about 1:15 a.m. on Bennett Mills Road. There was no apparent cause for the break which interrupted service in the area of South Lake View Drive, Bates Road and Boston Road, he said. Fire Company No. 1 and Jackson Mills Fire Co. responded, assisted by the Ocean County prosecutors unit and the state arson squad, police said. The arson squad is called out in every fatal fire, police said. Mr. Wimmer was born in Roanoke, Va., and moved here from Staten Island with his family in December. He was employed as a mason by S & S Construction Co., Woodbridge. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Guagenti Wimmer; two sons, David and Daniel; a stepson, Joseph Ferraro, and his mother, Mrs. Margaret Harler, Roanoke. Michele Scudiero was born in Brooklyn. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Scudiero, Brooklyn; three brothers, David and Daniel Wimmer and Joseph Ferrara; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Harler, and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mildren Scudiero, Brooklyn.
