Alan Lee Miner was buried at DeLand Memorial Gardens, DeLand, Volusia Co., Florida.3 He was born on December 2, 1959 at Orlando, Orange Co., Florida.3 He died on July 19, 2004 at Houston, Harris Co., Texas, at age 44.3,4 He When friends and family members describe longtime fourth-grade teacher Alan Miner, the word "special" always seems to surface. But the word wasn't just used to describe him. "Alan had the gift that made everybody, no matter who he was with, feel special," co-worker Betsy Lucht said Thursday. "We all always felt that Alan was paying special attention just to us." Miner, a popular teacher at Deltona Lakes Elementary School for 17 years, died Monday in Houston after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 45. Born in Orlando, Miner graduated from DeLand High School in 1977. He worked at SunTrust Bank in DeLand before graduating from the University of Central Florida in 1987. He began teaching soon after that. Miner was a member of Stetson Baptist Church, DeLand, and joined the Second Baptist Church in Houston after extended stays in Texas at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. "He was in Houston a long time and he met some people out there from the church who took him in as one of their own," said his brother, Kevin Miner of Leesburg, Va. Miner's struggle with a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma began in 1999 with what doctors initially thought was a sinus infection. A lump soon developed in his neck near the lymph glands. He battled the disease -- and its rigorous treatment of chemotherapy and bone marrow and stem-cell transplants -- for several years while continuing to do what he loved: teach. Kevin Miner said his older brother had a dry sense of humor and was very creative, designing Christmas cards and taking piano lessons. "He really got into collecting space stuff and Star Trek and Star Wars memorabilia after he started teaching," he said. His brother was a "cool'' teacher, he said, but also a disciplinarian who placed high demands on his students and expected them to meet them. "When parents request a specific teacher, that says something," Kevin Miner said. Lucht, who taught in the classroom next to Miner's, said he was a "wonderful role model" whom students respected and adored. Miner fought a "real hard battle," she said, coming to work every day even when he was so tired he could barely get out of bed. At one point, too weak to stand, he used a chair on wheels to teach from. "One little boy in my room absolutely adored Mr. Miner, so I'm concerned about him," she said. "It's going to be very difficult to start back to school without Alan." Miner also is survived by his parents, Edwin and Edna Miner, DeLand; and his grandfather, W.G. Slaughter, DeLand. Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, is in charge of arrangements. on July 23, 2004.4
