Clements, 75, a resident of Higginsville, Mo., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at Lafayette Regional Health Center, Lexington, Mo. Gerald married wife Linda Swartz on Aug. 26, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nev. Gerald attended several small county schools in Livingston County and graduated from Hale High School in 1951. He was drafted into the Army in March 1953 and took infantry basic training at Fort Riley, Kan. After infantry basic, he was sent to Camp Atterbury, Ind., for Military Police training and then sent to Sandi, Japan to Chemical, Biological, Radiological (C.B.R.) warfare school. After C.B.R. school, he was sent to the 5th Corporate Headquarters in Korea to finish his tour of duty in 1955. After the military, he worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. for 20 years, the last seven as a Commercial Sales Manager for Kansas and Missouri. He and his wife worked side by side in self employment for over 20 years, owning and operating five different businesses, the last three in which has seen major changes in the gas service station and convenience store business. Jerry's One Stop was the first convenience store in Warrensburg, Mo., with a fully lighted canopy and room for six cars to fuel at the same time, carrying regular, premium and diesel fuel. It was also the fist convenience store to offer self service, which the competition tried to get the city to shut Jerry's One Stop down, saying it was a fire hazard having customers pump their own fuel. During a gas war in the lat 80s, Jerry's One Stop was selling regular gas for three cents below cost and this war lasted appropriately 40 days. Jerry's One Stop was pictured on Kansas City television as having the cheapest gas in the state of Missouri and possibly the United States. Gerald and Linda semi-retired in 1995, they full retired in 1999 after selling their last place of business. Gerald was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #223. He was a former member of the Elks and Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce. Gerald and Linda enjoyed traveling and considered themselves fortunate to be able to travel throughout the United States and trips to Bermuda and Europe. They enjoyed their retirement at their lake house on Lake of the Ozarks in addition to collecting antiques, and visiting with their children and grandchildren, and playing cards and games with friends. Gerald is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; one sister, Janice Cochenour, Hale, Mo; three children, Clint Clements, Kansas City, Mo., Loretta Jackson, Kansas City, Mo., and Mark Swartz, Higginsville, Mo; mother-in-law, Mary Buchanan; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, father-in-law, Richard Cochenour and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Cochenour. Services will be at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Mo., on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at 10 a.m. There will be a family visitation on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Mo.
