His Social Security Number was 226-50-6244.9 Richard Lee Duncan was born on February 14, 1938 at Roanoke, Virginia.9,3,5,6 He married Shirley Ann Campbell on September 5, 1958 at Roanoke, Virginia.5,6,7 Richard Lee Duncan died on November 10, 2013 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 75.9,4,6 He Richard Lee Duncan passed so very peacefully from the life that he enjoyed so richly on November 10, 2013, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 75. Born on Valentine's Day in 1938, he came into the world a left- hander and an only child, born at home in Southeast Roanoke, at the end of the Great Depression, and on the eve of a World War. He often joked that he turned out far better than anyone might have expected with such a start in life. His mother and father (both deceased) were Evie Stewart Duncan and Lee Duncan, and Richard credited them with saving both his "hide and soul" with their strictness and love. He is survived by Shirley Campbell Duncan, the love of his life and wife of 55 years; and daughter, Kate Duncan, both of Salem, who, as is too often the case, assumed the difficult duties of primary caregivers during his illness; son, Gregory A. Duncan, wife Carol and daughter, Kyra, of Mt. Airy, N.C; son, David N. Duncan, wife Karen and daughters, Amanda and Courtney, of Fairfax; several cousins; and many friends. Richard graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956, where he was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, the Jefferson News. Roanoke Times readers may also recognize him as an eloquent contributor to the Cornershot column. He also recently served on the 50th anniversary reunion committee for JHS. He graduated from Roanoke College in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree in History, and was awarded a Master's Degree in Education from Hollins University in 1972. Friends and colleagues noted that Richard was a born teacher, and he taught in Roanoke County schools for 36 years. Most of those years were at Northside Middle School. In 1988, he was honored by the Virginia Education Association as the Social Studies Teacher of the Year for the entire Commonwealth. He also taught many years of summer school, and continued to serve as a substitute teacher and curriculum consultant for seven years after his formal retirement in 1996. It was a common occurrence for him to be recognized by grateful former students no matter where he was in the Roanoke Valley. One of his heroes in life was his Uncle Bill Duncan who, as a young Marine, survived the World War II Bataan Death March and horrific Cabanatuan POW Camp. Richard Duncan's life was filled with family, love, laughter, learning, music, books, and films. He was a devoted cat lover who rescued many felines over the years; he met the love of his life at Jefferson High School; he held a deep appreciation for our nation's history. on November 12, 2013.6
