Mr. Walls retired four years ago from a career in which he captained a towboat in a joint operation of the Valley Camp Coal Co., and Appalachian Power Co. He commanded, over the years, three boats that transported coal by barge from the Cedar Grove, Hughesion and Shrewsbury docks of the coal company to Appalachian's Cabin Creek and Kanawha River (Glasglow) generating plants. The operation, according to an offical of the caol company, was discontinued shortly after Mr. Wall's retirement. The service is now being provided on a contract basis with a barge firm. Mr. Walls was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County. Surviving: wife, Sadie; sons, Jimmy of Marmet, David of Wildwood, Ga., Earl of San Jose, Calif; stepdaughter, Mrs. Frances Carrell of Armond Beach, Fla; sister, Mrs. Deliah Barker of Marmet; brother, Russell of Oregon. The body is at the Pryor Funeral Home at East Bank. on December 7, 1966.3

He was an Air Force veteran and a graduate from WV State University with a degree in finance. After retiring from the NAPA organization and moving to Fla., he enjoyed volunteering at Munroe Regional Medical Center with over 1600 volunteer hours. A funeral is scheduled at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla. on February 16 at 10 a.m. followed by military honors at Bushnell National Cemetery. All are welcome to celebrate Jimmie Walls life. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on his 79th birthday, July 23, 2011, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Steve Wickham, who lovingly assisted him in the care of his wife, Edna Frances (Brown) Walls prior to her passing in 2007 and then lovingly cared for David as his health declined. Born July 23, 1932, at East Bank, W.Va., to Stephen Dewey and Effie Irene (Johnson) Walls. He has two brothers, Earl Lloyd Walls (deceased) and Jimmie Warren Walls. David is survived by his brother, Jimmie Walls, Ocala, Fla; former wife, Dollie Kinney, Maitland, Fla; children, David A. Walls (Beth), Collegedale, Tenn., Gary S. Walls (Connie), Apison, Tenn., Karen A. Wickham (Steve), Coalmont, Tenn., R. Neal Walls (Karen), Colorado, Kevin N. Walls (Susan), Trenton, Ga., Cynthia R. Moyer, Apopka, Fla; stepchildren, Eva Lynne Disbro (Jim), Ooltewah, Tenn., Shirley Cranfill, Ooltewah, Tenn, Fred Zollinger, Kauai, Hawaii; 24 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his faithful pet, Mikayla; and a host of friends. He attended East Bank Elementary School, Marmet Junior High and graduated from East Bank High School, all located in West Virginia. David drove coal trucks for a short time after high school and then was employed at various manufacturing companies doing precision instrument checks in his early years. He was employed by Hunnicutt & Associates, a land appraisal company based out of St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1958. He enjoyed working in the fresh air and sunshine that the land appraisal profession provided. In 1961, he was made a field supervisor for appraisal projects in Florida and Georgia. In 1966, he was recruited by the property tax division for the state of Georgia to supervise contracted reappraisal projects. Later, he was tax appraiser for Dade County, Ga. His last employment, for about 17 years, was with McKee Foods Corp. as an HVAC technician, retiring in 1997. After retiring, Coalmont became their home to be nearer to his wife's family and he appreciated the friendships developed with his neighbors in this community. David was a member of the Jasper Seventh-day Adventist Church and was always helping those in need. He has a special fondness for the Jasper Adventist Christian School. Memorial contributions to the school in his memory are appreciated, P.O. Box 787, Jasper, TN 37387. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow in Coalmont Cemetery. on July 25, 2011.3

Woodrum of Cedar Grove died late Saturday night in Laird Memorial Hospital at Montgomery after a three-week illness. He was 64. He was manager of the Chelyan Furniture Co. and was for 30 years store manager for Valley Camp Coal Co. He operated the Cedar Grove Collieries for 12 years before he took over operation of the Chelyan firm. He also had been employed by Cannelton Coal and Coke Co. Mr. Woodrum had been mayor for almost six years, having won three consecutive elections on the Progressive Party ticket. He was a native of West Columbia and was a 1914 graduate of Montgomery Preparatory School, which later became West Virginia Institute of Technology. He was a son of the late Thomas and Zenn Drake Woodrum. Surviving are one daughter, Dr. Anne Board of Atlanta, Ga; three sisters, Mrs. W. R. Witzel of Huntington, Mrs. Earl Witzel and Mrs. Pauline Tompkins of Cedar Grove; a grandson, a neice and three nephews. The body is at Cook Funeral Home in Cedar Grove. on September 25, 1960.4

A 1955 graduate of West Virginia University, she studied medicine at West Virginia University for two years and then transferred to the Medical College of Virginia, where she earned a medical degree in 1959. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega honor and leadership society. Dr. Board was the first woman to be senior warden for St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She also was a member of the church choir and president of the Women of St. Thomas Church. A past president of Region Eleven of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, she served on the board of the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women and was a member of the standing committee of the Diocese of Virginia. Dr. Board also was a member of the American and Southern medical associations and the Medical Society of Virginia. She served on the board of directors of Brookfield Inc. and was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine. Survivors include her husband, Dr. John A. Board; two sons, Dr. John A. Board Jr. of Durham, N.C; and Paul H. Board of Richmond; and a daughter, Susan L. Board of Laurel, Md. Her funeral will be at noon Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 3602 Hawthorne Ave. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 3602 Hawthorne Ave., Richmond, Va. 23222, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6480, Glen Allen, Va. 23058. on May 9, 1997.5
