Funeral services were held Saturday at the Salem United Methdist Church in Moravia Dr. Burton Tarr of New York officiated, assisted by the Rev. L. B. Deedrick. Burial was in Jay Cemetery near Blakesburg. on August 3, 1970.3

Osco J. Smith, 22, marine on duty at the disciplinary barracks at Terminal Island, was found floating yesterday morning at Berth 238, the westerly edge of the island. The body was found by James A. Allen and George B. Dunn, Harbor Department workmen. Smith whose home is in Des Moines, Ia., had been absent from duty since April 25. His body was estimated by police to have been in the water for more than a week. Whether there was any foul play could not be determined immediately. on May 4, 1949.4 He Mr. and Mrs. Guy McKern, Mrs. Newton Long and Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Perry went to Des Moines Friday to attend the funeral of Sgt. Osco J. Smith, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Osco Smith of 1161 23rd st., Des Moines, former resident of Moravia. Sgt. Smith was a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. McKern. Sgt. Smith was stationed with the Marines in San Pedro, Calif. His body was found May 3 in San Pedro Bay. His parents have not learned how he met death though the military authorities are still investigating. Sgt. Smith, 21, was born in Madrid and came to Des Moines in 1938. After graduating from the North high he enlisted in the Marines in Feb., 1945 and served two years in China, returning to the San Pedro base in June, 1948. Surviving are his parents, two brothers, Darrel of Minneapolis, Minn., and Carrel of Des Moines. on May 19, 1949.3

VanDorin was buried at Moravia Cemetery, Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa.1 He was born on January 24, 1858 at Salem, Henry Co., Iowa.1,3 He married Angeline Nora "Angie" McKern, daughter of Edmond/Edmund Edward McKern and Malinda Evelyn Van Doren, on October 9, 1878 at Appanoose Co., Iowa.1,2,4 William T. VanDorin died on February 12, 1943 at Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 85.1 He William T. VanDorin was born near Salem, Henry County, Iowa, Jan. 24, 1858, and passed away at his home in Moravia on Feb. 12, 1943, at the age of 86 years and 18 days. His mother died when be was 13 years of age and he assumed the household duties and the care of the younger children. He came to Appanoose County when he was 19 years of age and later united in marriage with Angie McKern Oct. 9, 1878. The couple went to Osborne County, Kans., for a period of 11 years after which they returned to Moravia. Mr. VanDorin entered mercantile bueineas and in addition was a successful farmer. He was active in community affairs, a member of the school board, on the city council, the mayor, and was also active in the affairs of the Methodist Chureh. He leaves to mourn his passing one adopted son, Freddie M. VanDorin of Rock Island, Ill., and family. During the last year or so of his illness he was under the loving care of his neice, Mrs. Flora Jones. Other survivors are three brothers and four sisters, Oscar of Albia, Louie of Argyle, Iowa, and Charley of Moravia, Mrs. Mary Clestel! of Moravia, Mrs. Ida Henderson of Cherokee, Okla., Mrs. Rosie Wenike of Salem, Iowa, and Mrs. Jennie Elmore also of Salem. Known for his kindly disposition and neighborliness, Mr. VanDorin has many friends who mourn his passing. Funeral services were held at the Moravia Methodist Church Sunday afternoon conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E. L. Pullman. Music for the service was furnished by Forrest Main and Mrs. George Winsler with Mrs. Fred Blumenstock accompanying at the piano. The hymns sung were "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me" "Going Down the Valley," and "Abide With Me." The following nephews of Mr. VanDorin served as pallbearers for the service: James T. VanDorin, Willie VanDorin, Freddie VanDorin, Arthur VanDorin, Ilef Clester and Bert McKern. Burial was in the Moravia cemetery. on February 18, 1943.1
