Nowels, for many years a resident of Moravia but of recent years a resident of California, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Selby in Moravia, Tuesday moning, April 28. She has been failing in health for some time. Many relatives and friends mourn her departure. Obituary - Eva McKern, daughter of Edmond and Malinda McKern, was born in Tama county, Feb. 26, 1857. At the age of six years she, with her parents, located near Moravia where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to John Nowels, a Civil War Veteran, who preceded her in death 27 years ago. Some 25 years ago she moved to Upland, Calif., where she made her home. She came back to Iowa last September to be with her children and sister. She leaves three children, Mrs. Frank Selby and John E. Nowels of Moravia, and Ms. Eva Fromm of San Bernardino, Calif; two sisters, Mrs. W.T. VanDorin of Moravia, Mrs. Geo. Curl of Chicago, Ill; two brothers, Wm. McKern of Florida, and Lewis McKern of Oregon; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Three children preceded her in death. She was a member of the Nazrene church in Upland, Calif. She passed away April 28, 1936, at the age of 79 years, 2 months, and 2 days. Funeral services wll be conducted from the M.E. Church in Moravia, Thursday afternoon, April 30, at 2 o'clock, Rev. Chas. L. Ellis officiating, assisted by Rev. Hall Johnson. Interment in Moravia cemetery. The pallbearers will be the great-nephews. on April 30, 1936.4

     William Henry McKern was buried at Roselawn Cemetery, Lakeland, Polk Co., Florida.3 He married Henrie Louise Eggers.2 William Henry McKern was born in July, 1858 at Tama Co., Iowa.7,2 He married Arthelia Hiner in 1880.2 William Henry McKern married Pyra Fenton on February 28, 1906 at Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa.2,8 William Henry McKern died on February 22, 1938 at Orlando, Orange Co., Florida, at age 79.2 He Word has been received here of the death of William H. McKern, 80, of Lakeland, Florida, which occurred at the home of his step-son, Doyle Mardis, at Orlando, Florida, Tuesday night, Feb. 22. Mr. McKern was a former Moravia resident and the father of Mrs. William Burns and Guy McKern of Moravia. The son of Edmond and Malinda McKern, he was born in Tama county and came to Moravia with his parents when small boy. He lived here until he married Arthelia Hiner in 1880. They moved to Hamilton county, Nebraska and after two years there moved to Rollins county, Kansas, where they spent eleven years before moving back to Iowa. In 1898 Mrs. McKern died, leaving her husband and three children. In 1906, Mr. McKern married Mrs. Pyra Fenton, of Moravia, who died in 1914. The next year Mr. McKern moved to Florida and later married Mrs. Mardis, who preceded him in death in February, 1937. Surviving are three children, Mrs. William Burns and Guy McKern of Moravia, Mrs. Grace Smith of Des Moines; one sister, Mrs. Mary Curl of Hillsboro, lowa. One brother, Lewis, of Brownsville, Oregon; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and four stepchildren. Funeral services and burial were held at Lakeland, Florida. on March 3, 1938.2

VanDorin on October 9, 1878 at Appanoose Co., Iowa.2,3,4 Angeline Nora "Angie" McKern died on January 23, 1938 at Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 76.3 She Angie Nora, daughter of Edmond and Malinda McKern, was born in Tama county, Iowa, November 9, 1861. After a lingering illness, she passed away at her home in Moravia, Iowa, at 1:30 p.m., January 23, 1938, aged 76 years, 2 months and 14 days. Mrs. VanDorin came with her parents to Appanoose county, Iown, when she was two years of age. She was united in marriage to William VanDorin October 9, 1878. She and her husband lived for a short time about 12 miles southwest of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They moved in a covered wagon to Osborne county, Kansas, September 1, 1879. In the year 1890 they moved back to Iowa in a covered wagon and settled in Moravia where they became prominent in business and community affairs. Excepting two years spent in California, she lived the remainder of her life in or near Moravia. Mr. and Mrs. VnnDorin's married life extended over a period of 69 years. Having no children of their own they were unusually kind to children. Mrs. VanDorin's youngest sister and brother made their home with them for a number of years. Mrs. Lee Dhority, left an orphan in Colorado, also lived with the VanDorin family for a number of years. At the time of her death, Mrs. VanDorin was a faithful and loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Moravia. Besides her husband, she leaves an adopted son, Freddie, at home; one sister, Mrs. Mary Curl of Lockridge, Iowa; two brothers, William McKern ot Lakeland, Florida, and Louis McKern of Brownsville, Oreron; many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Moravia Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 28, at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Chas. L. Ellis oficiating. Interment at Moravia cemetery. on January 27, 1938.3

Moravia, Aug 3 - After a brief illness John Nowles passed away at his home in Moravia July 30th at 2 oclock a m. He had an iron constitution that enabled him to maintain an easy victory over the forces of death for 91 years. He was one of the oldest residents of Appanoose Co. having come here from his native state, Ohio, in 1837. Mr. Nowles enlisted in Co. "I" 3rd Ia Cavalry Aug 15th 1861 at Ioonium, Ia, was wounded in the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, was discharged March 20, 1863, joined Samual Summer Post No. 398 as a charter member Aug. 21st and was flag bearer of the Post and officer of the day until the time of his death. As a soldier he was always true to his charge. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father and highly respected by all who knew him. Saturday at four oclock an imprefsive funeral service was held, conducted at the home by the local post of the G.A.R. and at the cemetry by the Masons. on August 3, 1909.6

She fell asleep in Jesus at her home in Moravia Saturday morning, Jan. 21, 1933, at 5:20, at the age of 74 years 8 months, 11 days, having resided in Moravia for the past 15 years.
She was united in marriage to Perry Theodore McKern, August 15, 1876 at Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. To this union six children were born; 3 having preceded their mother in death. Those living to mourn her departure are Mrs. Lenna Wailes, of Moravia, Clyde and Bert of near Moravia. All of whom were with her during her last hours. Also three sisters: Fannie Gunion of Nobleville, Indiana; Ellen Yorgas of Des Moines, Iowa; Lucy Dugdale, of Beloit, Kansas. One brother Evan of Macon, Missouri; 20 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Aunt Kate, as she was commonly called by her many friends, confessed her faith in Christ at the age of 14 at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, having been a faithful member of the Church of Christ until sickness forced her from active service, often being in attendane when it seemed she was unable.
She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and friend.2 She was born on May 10, 1858 at Tama Co., Iowa.3,2,4 As of August 15, 1876,her married name was McKern.1 She married Perry Theodore McKern, son of Edmond/Edmund Edward McKern and Malinda Evelyn Van Doren, on August 15, 1876 at Mount Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa.1,2 Carrie Catherine VanDoren died on January 21, 1933 at Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 74.3,2

Surviving are six daughters, Ava Foster of Moravia, Leah Ervin of Silvis, Ill., Pearl Lamantia and Hazel Bethell, both of Centerville, Josephine Kennis of Betendorf and Jacquetta Morrison ot Montezuma; two sons, Arthur of Ames and Hoyt of Creston; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bert of Centerville. The service was held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doyle Henderson officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery west of Moravia. on June 17, 1976.6

She is survived by a son, Chester P. of Charlotte, N.C; six grandchildren; and a sister, Myra Tilson of Vancouver, Wash. The service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Duley Funeral Home in Centerville, the Rev. Gerald Campbell officiating.
