Fern was born in Strong City, Oklahoma on November 10, 1934, to John Everett and Fay Cole Guess. Fern and her family moved west in 1940. Her family traveled to California in a Ford pickup, stopping and camping along the way until they reached Borrego Springs, where her father had a job waiting for him. She moved from Borrego Springs to Imperial Valley, and finally to Blythe where she graduated high school in 1952. She then moved to Los Angeles and attended Woodbury Business School. It was there while having lunch that she met her future husband, Lyle C. Haller. Fern and Lyle were married in 1953. They moved to Tulare in 1960 to open The Village Bowl restaurant. She later went to work for the Tulare County Social Services Department where she worked for 30 years. She spent many years in Dinuba, CA as manager of the Social Services Office and ended her career in Visalia managing In Home Supportive Services. Fern served on several boards, including the Kings/Tulare Area Agency on Aging. Fern and Lyle lived on Kaweah Drive for 35 years and enjoyed the holiday season and decorating their home for Christmas Tree Lane. She was a wonderful cook and loved having her family over at holidays and special occasions. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and games. She loved Encore Theatre and attended many productions over the years. Fern would never hesitate to take care of her grandchildren, as they were the light of her life. She always enjoyed meeting her sisters in Blythe to attend homecomings and class reunions. After Lyle passed away, she enjoyed traveling with her close friends, the "Island Girls". In her later years she became a passionate San Francisco Giants fan. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle C. Haller, her parents, her brothers John and Joe Guess, and her sister, Melva Craig. She is survived by her sister Frieda Asbury, daughter Mitzie Ruiz (Fred), and her son Chris Haller (Lilia). She also leaves behind grandchildren Lyle Haller III, Lauren Ricks, Matthew Ruiz, Eric Haller, and Zachary Haller. She was especially proud of her great-grandchildren Emily and Avery Moore and Austin Ricks. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kaweah Delta Hospice, 623 W. Willow St., Visalia, CA 93291. There will be a viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, 132 W. Kern Ave., Tulare. There will be a chapel service at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, followed by interment at North Tulare Public Cemetery, 4572 J St., Tulare.
