She had been in declining health for several years. Mrs. Lewis was a native of Pittsylvania County and was daughter of the late Sam Newby and Melissa Dodson Newby. Most of her life was spent in Danville and she was employe at the Star Laundry prior to her retirement. Her husband, Luther G. Lewis, died Sept. 28, 1960. Surviving are one daughter Mrs. Lois Vaden, and one son W. A. Lewis, both o£ Danville. Three grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Wrenn-Yeatts Chapel and interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery. The body will rest at the funeral home prior to the services and the family will be at the home of her daughter, 461 Old Mayfield Rd. on October 28, 1963.4 She died on October 28, 1963 at Danville, Virginia, at age 83.4,3

She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Halifax County. Her husband, Henry E. Thompson, died Oct. 10, 1943. Surviving are three daughters and five sons: Mrs. Eldora Wallace of Ontario, Va; Mrs. Vernell Scearce and Mrs. Margaret McKinney, both of Danville; Stonewall Thompson of Keysyille, and Charlie Thompson, Clifton Thompson, Jack Thompson and Champ Thompson, all of Sutherlin. Also surviving are three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Minnie Hughes of Richmond; Mrs. Maggie Whitt of Timberlake, N. C; Mrs. Harriette Latta of Rougemont, N. C; Howard Newby of Vernon Hill; Mathew Newby of Richmond, and Robert Newby of Petersburg; and 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from Townes Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Chaney cemetery near Reaves Mill in Pittsylvania County. The body will rest at Townes Funeral Home, and the family will be at the residence of Jack Thompson at Sutherlin. on July 5, 1963.3

Newby died on November 17, 1961 at Danville, Virginia, at age 75.2 She Final rites for Mrs. Hattie Newby Henry, who died at the age of 75 yesterday in Memorial Hospital, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Ingram. Mrs. Henry, a daughter of the late Champ Newby and Elcana Owen Newby, was born June 1, 1886, in Halifax County. In December 1906 she married Charles David Henry, who died in April of last year. Most of her life was spent in Danville and she resided at 184 North Ave. She was employed by Danville Knitting Mills for many years prior to her retirement ten years ago. She was a member of Claiborne St Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Garnett E Wyatt, and one son, Wilson Patrick Henry, both of Danville. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Minnie Hughes, Robert Newby and Mathew Newby, all of Richmond; Howard Newby of Ingram, Mrs. Maggie Whitt of Roxboro, N.C., Mrs. Harriett Latta of Roxboro, N.G., and Mrs. Mattie Thompson of Sutherlin. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. The body is at the funeral home and the family at the home of Mrs. Wyatt, 154 Howeland Circle. on November 18, 1961.6

Crissie Hill, all of Danville. The body is resting at the funeral home. on April 6, 1960.5

Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. C. K. Wallace, Drakes Branch; Mrs. Vernelle Scearce, Florida; Mrs. Margaret McKinney, Danville; William Henry "Champ" Thompson, Halifax County; and W. C. Thompson of Pittsylvania County. The remains rest at Townes Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:30 until 9 o'clock. on May 4, 1974.5

     Vernell Beatrice Thompson was buried at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Virginia.5,9 She was born on December 11, 1917 at Charlotte Co., Virginia.5 As of December 11, 1937,her married name was Scearce.3 She married Chester Allen Scearce on December 11, 1937 at Danville, Virginia.3,5,10,9 Vernell Beatrice Thompson died on February 24, 2016 at Virginia at age 98.5 She Vernell Thompson Scearce died on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Born December 11, 1917, in Charlotte County, Va., Mrs. Scarce was the daughter of Mattie Sue Newby Thompson and Henry Edward Thompson. In 1937, she married Chester A. Scearce with whom she enjoyed a blessed marriage for over 75 years, living and working in Danville until the 1970s, then in Wilmington, N.C., Charlotte, N.C., and Deerfield Beach, Fla., before returning in 1983 to Danville, where she joined the remained and active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. Mrs. Scearce was predeceased by two sisters, Eldora Thompson Wallace, and Margaret Thompson McKinney; and five brothers, Stonewall, Charlie, Clifton, Jack, and Champ Thompson. She is survived by her son, Donald and his wife, Soncha, who reside in Honolulu, Hawaii, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016, from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with a celebration of Mrs. Scearce's life to follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Reverend Doug Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church Building Fund, 2500 Westover Dr., Danville, VA 24541. on February 26, 2016.5
