William Douglas Hackett William Douglas "Chip" Hackett, 61, of Fincastle, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, surrounded by his family after battling Glioblastoma brain cancer. Chip graduated from William Byrd High School, Class of 1977. He worked at CEI for over 20 years and most recently at Salem VA Medical Center. Chip was fondly known as "The Hackman" and never met a stranger. He loved riding his Harley, hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Peggy Hackett and his sister, Lynette Coulter. Left to cherish his memory is his former wife, Tonia Hackett; their daughter, Chelsae Barrett (Jakob); grandson, Wesley; brother, Dean (Cheryl); brother-in-law, Mark Coulter; nephews, Corey, Chris (Tasha); and two great-nephews, Ethan and Oliver. Many close friends include Bobby Riley, Calvin Mitchell, Frank Hubbard and Paul Nester, and his faithful ever-present animal companions, Louie and Buddy. The family would like to thank his caregivers, Jeanette Buchanan, Melissa Wood and Anesa Vugdalic for their dedication, compassion, and kindness. Roy was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Roy was born to Frank and Katie Atkins in Roanoke, Virginia, on July 25, 1932. He attended Jefferson High School and started his thirty plus year career at White Foundry at the age of 17. After retiring from White Foundry in 1985, he pursued a career in trucking with Fuller Automotive and with Schwerman Trucking, retiring for the second time in 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-one years, Joyce Hodges Atkins; parents, Frank and Katie Atkins; siblings, Jimmy Atkins, Christella McVey, and Ann Gross; and grandson, Jonathan Wright. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle (Bob) Yost, Sonya (Mike) Zaronsky, Catina Wright (Eddie Yeary), Sonya Mullins (Pete Aheron), and Sunnie "Nikki" (Cameron) Heflin; sixteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Roy's life is one that is described as hardworking, dedicated, loyal, fun loving, kind and compassionate. Roy attended Bonsack Baptist Church for a number of years, where he was baptized with his daughter, Michelle, in 2016. He also had a love for fishing which he enjoyed in recent years at Top Sail Island with special friends, Jody and Rhonda Smith. Roy devoted many hours in our community serving the less fortunate and donated countless hours at the Roanoke VHRC office. Special neighbors, friends, and caregivers, Gary and Danielle Foster, Steve and Libby Jones, Marie Gray, Sam Toney, Bob Ayers, Randy and Susan Ashberry, Howard and Linda McVey, Gary Smith, Dale Yopp, Mary Brubaker, and Kelsey Moe. Roy had so many special friends and neighbors. There are too many to list. The family would like to thank you all for your love and support. A special thank you for the wonderful team of caregivers, nurses and staff of Star City Health & Rehab and the Amedysis Hospice team. Regardless of the situation, Roy always had a pocket full of sunshine and shared his contagious smile with all who crossed his path. Jeffrey W. Wellons was driving a 1986 Ford Thunderbird north in the southbound lanes of North Electric Road near Sheraton Drive when the vehicle struck a Mercedes sedan head-on, police said. Wellons, one of seven people hospitalized after the 1:40 a.m. accident, died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was legally drunk, according to Roanoke County police Lt. David McMillan. Police also said Wellons was not wearing a seat belt. His two passengers also were hospitalized, as were the driver of the Mercedes and three passengers. Except for Wellons, police would not identify any of the injured or discuss their conditions. on July 12, 2005.7 He Jeffery Warren Wellons, 46, of Shawsville, died in Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a car accident on Sunday morning, July 10, 2005. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Edith Wellons. Surviving family include his children, Cheryl Dee Wellons of Atlanta, Ga., and Christie Lee Wellons of Elliston and brothers Woody Wellons of Elliston and Dell Wellons of Salem. Theodore Earl Dearden II Theodore Earl “Nick” Dearden II, 70, passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at his home. Nick was born Jan. 30, 1947, in Scranton, Pa. After completing high school in Virginia Beach at Princess Anne, Nick went to Old Dominion University for two years. He then went on to work in the grocery business for Food Fair, then with Hostess, and ultimately purchasing his own Little Debbie franchise. Nick met many people who he would call friends throughout his 70 years. Nick was an avid reader and a lover of all kinds of music. He loved his family, his friends, his Harley and Corvette, and Happy Hours — not necessarily in that order all of the time. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Earl “Ted” and Virginia Dearden; and sister, Holly. He is survived by his brother, Bruce Dearden of Foley, Ala; sister, Connie Haynie (Jerry) of Morganton, N.C; stepson, Jeff Ellington (Katie) of Newport News, Va; and grandchildren, Ann Chappell Ellington and David Ellington. JoAnne Kelly JoAnne Kelly, September 17, 1940 - April 8, 2023. JoAnne Kelly peacefully passed on Saturday, April 8, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family during the last few days of her life. JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe Cornelius Kelly, and Susie Hall Kelly; her brothers, Roscoe Kelly, Jr., and Wayne Kelly; her children, Charles William Calvert, Jr; and her great-grandchild, Dakota Elizabeth Wise. Those left to cherish JoAnne’s memory are her children, David Wayne Calvert, Deborah Sue Wise, Tina Louise Scott (Wayne), and Lisa Rae Abshire (Gary Elliott); her grandchildren, Michael, Kelley, Curtis, John William, Matt, Halee, Chad, and Cierria; her great-grandchildren, Angel, Andrew Jackson, Bailey, Laelin, Kayleigh, Liam, Emerson, Emma, Brayleigh Joanne, River, and Eli; and sister-in-law, Almeda Kelly. A special thank you to Donna and Tommy for all their love and support.3 She was born on September 17, 1940 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,4,2,3 As of March 16, 1981,her married name was Conner.1 She married Clifton Wayne Conner, son of Sheldon Garwood Conner and Evelyn Poff, on March 16, 1981 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.1 JoAnne Kelly and Clifton Wayne Conner were divorced on March 14, 1983 at Roanoke, Virginia.4 JoAnne Kelly died on April 8, 2023 at Virginia at age 82.3

Earnest Calvin King was buried at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Road, Cloverdale, Botetourt Co., Virginia.2 He was born on January 13, 1941 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.2,3 He married Vickie Lynn Atkinson, daughter of Ralph Roderick Atkinson and Alberta Louise Poff, on July 3, 1961 at York, York Co., South Carolina.1 Earnest Calvin King and Vickie Lynn Atkinson were divorced on May 22, 1979 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.1 Earnest Calvin King died on November 19, 2017 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 76.2 He Earnest Calvin King, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017. Mr. King was born January 13, 1941 in Salem, a son of the late William Alvin King and Willie Jones King. He served his country in the United States Navy. He retired from Roanoke City Public Schools. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who also loved watching sports- especially wrestling, and the news. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Ralph King; brothers, Claude King and Joe King; sisters, Louise Keene and Venice Blair. Surviving are his son, Earnest A. King; daughter, Judith Johnson; grandchildren, Danyl Thomason, Roderick Johnson, Chad Johnson, Kyle King, and Michelah King; great grandchildren, Jakoby Johnson, Jacelyn Johnson, and Alayna Johnson; brothers, John King and Danny Ferguson; sisters, Jean Jones and Evelyn Scott; and partner, Sandra Kennedy. A graveside service will be conducted at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. on November 21, 2017.2
