He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of the DAV. Alva is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ernie McCormick Thomas; daughters and their husbands, Toby and Frank DeMattia of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Debby and Jim Bain and Donna and Charles Tree, all of St. Albans; sister, Phyllis Faulkner of Milford, Del; grandchildren, Daniel DeMattia, Jenna Masters, Travis, Danette and Ericka Bain and Joshua Tree; and great-granddaughter, Emily DeMattia. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with military rites at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens with Pastor Dan Armstrong officiating. No visitation will be observed. Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, is in charge of arrangements. on March 17, 2005.3

He started school at Fish Elementary in Poca, WV and graduated from Nitro High School on May 24, 1960. He was active in Bible, science and vocational club and all county choir. The Baber Agee Methodist Church was a very important part of his growing up years as were his Bible teachers, Paul and Betty Joe Hanna. He enlisted in the US Army in February of 1961 and spent 3 years at Yakima Firing Center as a distinguished member of the Military Police unit. After leaving the service he began working at Roadway Express in Columbus, OH as a clerk/dispatcher. He married his wife of 45 years, Janet (Lawrence) of Yakima on May 2, 1964. He then became a police officer in Columbus, OH where they lived the first 4 years of their life. His son Melvin James was born in 1966; in 1968 they moved back to Yakima to begin a career as a Yakima police officer, attaining the rank of Sgt. It was in Yakima his daughter Lisa Anne was born. He elected to retire in 1986 due to heart problems. He was one of the finest officers to grace the rolls of the Yakima Police Department. He was president and active in the Police Patrolman's Association. The last few years of his career he was assigned to the detectives division and was a polygraph examiner. As a polygraph examiner he was truly one of the best. He served as treasurer and president of the Northwest Polygraph Association. He lectured at many seminars on the polygraph and interrogation in the Northwest and in Charlotte, NC. He was always the highlight of every social hour and gathering. Jim enjoyed life to the fullest everyday. He enjoyed snowmobiling, bowling, golf, fishing, camping, car racing, baseball, basketball, and going to the National Finals Rodeo. He especially loved to travel and see new places and meet new people. He and his wife would travel to see family in West Virginia, Ohio, Florida, Michigan, California, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas. His heart condition limited his travel in the last 3 years. He was a member of the PRCA, VFW, NWPEA, the Ski Benders Snowmobile Club and the Washington State Snowmobile Association. He was co-president with his wife of the Wide Hollow PTA. He is survived by his wife Janet, children: Melvin of Selah, WA and Lisa and son-in-law Randy Matthews of Yakima, grandchildren: Hunter Lee and Cassie Kay Matthews, sister Cassie (Bob) Pritt, brothers: Clyde (Sharon) Bailey, Clay (Leslie) Bailey, and Craig Bailey, 3 nephews, 2 nieces, 1 great-niece, and numerous aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother Lota Bailey and grandparents Ed and Bettie McCormick. Visitation will be offered on Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm at Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors. The funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday at the WestSide Baptist Church, 6901 Summitview Avenue in Yakima, WA. Concluding burial will be at Reservation Community Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to YVMH Hospice or Camp Prime Time. on December 9, 2009.2
