Murray and Mark Murray; and one niece, Jennifer Murray. A native of Roanoke, he had been a Peninsula resident for 55 years. After serving for 35 years between the Navy, Naval Reserve and Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, William retired in 1983. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association and had also served as Scout Master for Troop #57 of the Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include three sons, Ralph Thurman and his wife, Jenny, Michael Thurman, and Gary Thurman and his wife, Patty; three grandchildren, Carrie Anderson and her husband, Mike, Amanda Morrisette and her husband, Rob, and Ryan Thurman; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Nicole Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Thurman, and one son, William Franklin Thurman. A visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held immediately following at 6 p.m. with the Monsignor Michael D. McCarron officiating. Family and friends will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the church on Tuesday, Dec. 23, to go to Hampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery for burial at 9 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 100 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
